The Delta Amex companion certificate is the single biggest reason to hold the Delta Platinum or Delta Reserve card — a buy-one-get-one round-trip every card anniversary, with the companion paying only taxes and fees. But whether it justifies the annual fee depends on the fares you actually fly. Run your numbers below.
Delta Platinum Amex (personal and business) issues a Main Cabin round-trip companion certificate on each renewal; Delta Reserve issues one valid in First Class, Comfort+, or Main Cabin. Certificates cover round-trip travel in the 48 contiguous US states plus Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America. The companion pays taxes and fees (from about $22 domestic, up to $250 international).
Certificates only book into specific fare classes (L/U/T/X/V for Main Cabin), which aren't always available — especially on peak dates and thin routes. Book early and stay flexible; if you never find eligible fares, the certificate is worth $0.
If you reliably fly a $400+ round-trip with a companion once a year and can find eligible fare classes, the certificate alone can offset the fee — the calculator above shows your break-even.
No — and companion tickets earn no miles or MQDs for the companion's fare.
On your card renewal (anniversary), not at signup — valid for one year from issuance.
