☀️ TRENDING MILES & POINTS NEWS

  • ✈️ Air India cuts award prices up to 52% - U.S. to India just got a lot more reachable

  • ✈️ United officially launches tiered Polaris fares - cheapest business class tickets lose lounge access and seat selection

  • 🏨 Hyatt's award chart is going from 3 tiers to 5 tiers this May - some sweet spots are closing fast

  • 💳 Amex Business Platinum welcome offer climbs as high as 300,000 points right now

Something quietly shifted in the loyalty world this weekend - and one of the moves came from a direction almost nobody expected.

Air India just voluntarily cut its own award prices. By up to 52 percent. On some of the most sought-after routes in the world. Programs just don't do that. So when one does, it's worth paying attention immediately.

Meanwhile, United is moving in the opposite direction - stripping perks from its cheapest Polaris tickets in a way that changes the value equation for anyone booking international business class. We've got the full picture on both, plus a Hyatt warning you shouldn't sleep on.

🤓 Miles & Points Trivia

Quick question before we dive in: What is the maximum award price reduction Air India just made to its frequent flyer award chart?

  • 🇮🇳 25% reduction

  • 🇮🇳 35% reduction

  • 🇮🇳 52% reduction

  • 🇮🇳 67% reduction

The answer is waiting for you near the bottom of today's newsletter. Keep scrolling. 👇

✈️ Air India Just Made the India Route Genuinely Exciting

Frequent flyer programs raising award prices is so common it barely registers as news anymore. So when Air India went in the opposite direction - cutting award prices by up to 52% across key routes - it genuinely stopped me in my tracks.

The Routes That Got Cheaper

Economy awards between North America and India saw the biggest reductions. But the meaningful news for aspirational travelers is that business class from the U.S. to India also got cheaper. And crucially, Air India removed the requirement to book the cheapest awards far in advance - making those lower prices actually usable rather than theoretical.

If you've been eyeing India as a bucket-list destination, this is the moment to check availability. Air India has been rebuilding its long-haul fleet aggressively, and the product has improved considerably. Use Award Travel Finder at https://awardtravelfinder.com to scout what's available before prices move again.

The timing is also interesting given the Chase Ultimate Rewards to Air Canada Aeroplan 20% transfer bonus running through April 30th. Aeroplan is one of the best ways to book Star Alliance partners - and while Air India isn't Star Alliance, it's a useful reminder that transfer bonuses are stacking up right now across multiple programs.

For all things Air India and more award sweet spots, our Award Travel Finder newsletter tracks redemption opportunities like this daily - it's worth a subscribe if you're actively planning a trip.

✈️ United Just Made Basic Economy Out of Business Class

United has officially launched what it calls 'fare families' for Polaris business class and premium economy. The framing is diplomatic. The reality is simpler: the cheapest business class fares now come with restrictions that would have felt absurd two years ago.

What 'Basic Business' Actually Means

Buy the cheapest Polaris ticket and you'll now face: paid seat selection, no changes, and - the one that stings most - no Polaris Lounge access. You're paying business class prices to sit in a business class seat, but you're being treated like a basic economy passenger the moment you arrive at the airport.

United has been telegraphing this for a while. Delta and American have both been moving the same direction. The playbook is identical: create a stripped-down fare that technically keeps the cabin structure intact while quietly removing the benefits that made premium cabins worth it.

The takeaway for award travelers is significant. If you're booking United Polaris with points, make sure you understand which fare bucket your award is landing in - and what perks actually come with it. Run your numbers with our United Miles Calculator at https://milesandpointsdaily.com/united-miles-calculator to see if the math still works for your specific route.

🏨 Book These Hyatt Awards Before May - Seriously

Hyatt is replacing its current three-tier pricing structure (Off-peak, Standard, Peak) with a five-tier model this May. The new tiers are labeled Lowest, Low, Moderate, Upper, and Top. On paper that sounds like more granularity. In practice, it means more opportunities for pricing to creep upward on properties that currently land in favorable tiers.

The Window That's Actually Closing

The smart move right now is to identify properties you've been considering and lock in bookings under the current chart before the switchover. Hyatt still maintains its eight hotel categories, so the underlying structure isn't disappearing - but the pricing within those categories is about to get more dynamic in ways that rarely benefit the consumer.

Use our Hyatt Points Calculator at https://milesandpointsdaily.com/hyatt-points-calculator to see what your points are worth today versus what you might get post-change. And for ongoing Hyatt coverage and promotions, check our Hyatt stories at https://milesandpointsdaily.com/t/hyatt.

The Hyatt award chart restructure hits in May. If you're sitting on Hyatt points and have a trip in mind, booking now under the current chart is the lower-risk move.

💳 The Citi Strata Elite Is More Interesting Than It Looks

The Citi Strata Elite arrived in a premium package - metal card, elevated perks - but the real headline is what the card earns and where those points can go. The current welcome offer delivers 75,000 ThankYou points plus credits worth up to $1,200 in the first year.

The AAdvantage Connection Changes the Math

Citi ThankYou points now transfer to American Airlines AAdvantage - and that's a bigger deal than it might seem. We covered the AAdvantage program's standalone value in depth earlier this week. The short version: AAdvantage miles are genuinely useful for booking partner awards, especially on oneworld carriers like Cathay Pacific, British Airways, and Qatar. Having another path to earn them accelerates your options.

The timing also lines up with a live Citi ThankYou transfer bonus right now. Transfers to Avianca LifeMiles get a 25% bonus through April 18th, and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club gets 30% through April 18th. If you've been building a ThankYou balance, those bonuses are worth factoring into your redemption strategy before they expire.

💰 300,000 Points From One Card Application

The Amex Business Platinum just surfaced a welcome offer as high as 300,000 Membership Rewards points - one of the highest offers we've seen on this card. At the same time, the Amex Business Gold is offering up to 200,000 points on its own elevated welcome bonus.

Are These Offers Right For You?

Both cards come with significant annual fees (the Business Platinum is $695), so the math needs to work beyond just the welcome bonus. The Business Platinum's real value lies in its lounge access (including Centurion Lounges), statement credits, and 5x earning on flights booked direct with airlines and prepaid hotels through Amex Travel. For high-spending businesses that travel frequently, the annual value proposition is real.

Before applying, check your eligibility using our guide at https://milesandpointsdaily.com/which-american-express-welcome-bonus-are-you-still-eligible-for- - Amex's once-per-lifetime bonus rules mean timing matters here. And run your points through the Amex Points Calculator at https://milesandpointsdaily.com/amex-points-calculator to see what 300,000 MR points could realistically get you.

🚨 Deal Alert: Buy Flying Blue Miles With an 80% Bonus

Air France-KLM Flying Blue is running an 80% bonus on purchased miles right now, priced at 1.69 cents per mile through April 16th. That's one of the better buy-miles prices in the current market.

Flying Blue miles are genuinely useful - they price transatlantic awards dynamically but regularly surface excellent rates on Air France and KLM flights, including business class to Europe. The Choice to Flying Blue transfer bonus of 100% (ending April 24th) is also live if you have Choice points to deploy. For the full list of active buy-points promotions, head to https://milesandpointsdaily.com/buy-points-promotions.

🌎 Trivia Reveal

The answer is: 52% reduction. Air India cut some award prices by up to 52% - which is genuinely extraordinary for a loyalty program. Programs almost always move in one direction with award pricing. Air India just went the other way, making it one of the more interesting award programs to watch right now.
