The airline quietly rolled out automatic seat change technology inside its app. You set your seating preferences - window, aisle, front of cabin, whatever you care about - and the app watches for better seats to open up. When one does, it moves you. No manual checking, no missed opportunities because you forgot to look.

This is genuinely useful if you fly American - especially if you travel frequently and book early when seat maps are still crowded. One catch worth knowing: it's currently limited to solo travelers on single-passenger reservations, and the automatic search stops 24 hours before departure. Seats open up constantly as passengers change plans, upgrades clear, and elite members get moved around. That churn was invisible to most travelers before - now AA's app catches it for you, as long as you're flying solo.

Here's an interesting development from the credit card world: Chase is exploring a program that would give rejected applicants for some of its co-branded travel cards a second shot - but through a partner lender rather than Chase itself.

The practical effect is that someone Chase won't extend credit to directly could still get access to a co-branded card and stay within that loyalty ecosystem. United Airlines is apparently interested in this arrangement, which makes sense - MileagePlus has increasingly made its own card almost essential for getting the most out of the program (priority boarding, checked bags, upgrade eligibility). Keeping someone in the MileagePlus card family, even via a partner lender, is better for United than losing them entirely.

If this rolls out broadly, it signals how seriously airlines are treating their co-branded card relationships. The card isn't just a revenue tool anymore - it's become part of the core product. Getting rejected for a travel card shouldn't necessarily mean getting locked out of the best version of a loyalty program.

Nothing is live yet - this is still exploratory. But if you've been turned down for a United or another Chase co-branded card recently, it's worth keeping an eye on this. The application landscape for travel cards may be about to get meaningfully more inclusive.

Two targeted Amex Offers just surfaced that are worth checking right now. The JetBlue deal offers a $60 statement credit when you spend $400 or more with JetBlue - that's effectively a 15% discount on a base fare. The Frontier offer gives $50 back on a $200+ Frontier purchase.

These are targeted, which means not everyone will see them. Log into your Amex account and check the Amex Offers section for each card you hold - the offers can vary by card, so it's worth checking all of them. If you were already planning to book JetBlue or Frontier, this is straightforward free money. If you weren't, the JetBlue offer in particular might tip the math on a route where cash fares are competitive.

Check your Amex Offers dashboard now. These kinds of airline statement credit offers disappear without warning, and since they're targeted, availability isn't guaranteed. Add them to your card before booking anything - you can't add them retroactively.

We covered Citi's Japan Airlines partnership last week, but the Upgraded Points podcast this week added some useful context worth flagging. Citi ThankYou cardholders are currently getting 1,300 JAL Mileage Bank miles for every 1,000 ThankYou points transferred - thanks to a 30% launch bonus that runs through October 24. Capital One also has a 30% bonus to JAL live right now, but it expires tomorrow, September 30 - after that it reverts to its base 4:3 ratio (0.75:1). So today both are boosted, but Citi's bonus has three more weeks of runway while Capital One's closes tomorrow.

Alaska's Atmos Rewards program - the joint loyalty program launched with Hawaiian Airlines in 2025 - is rolling out a genuinely interesting flexibility feature. Starting January 1, 2027, members will be able to choose how they earn elite status: by distance flown (1 point per mile), amount paid (5 points per dollar), or segments flown (500 points per segment).

The Upgraded Points podcast flagged this is already rolling out ahead of the January start date. If you're a road warrior who buys discounted fares and flies constantly, the segment or dollar option could accelerate your path to status significantly compared to the old distance-based model. If you buy premium fares occasionally, the dollars-paid option rewards that behavior too.

This doesn't require immediate action - it kicks in January 2027. But it's worth understanding now so you can plan your Q4 2026 flying strategy around whichever earning metric favors your travel patterns. The flexibility is a genuine improvement over a pure distance model.
