Quick question before we dive in: when was the last time you actually checked whether your Capital One miles were worth transferring anywhere? For most people, the answer is 'not recently' - and today's lead story might change your answer permanently.
There's also a genuinely alarming hotel story today that I want every points traveler to read before they book another award stay. It's the kind of thing that sounds impossible until it happens to you.
🤓 Miles & Points Trivia
EVA Air's Infinity MileageLands program is known for releasing business class award space to partners. Which of the following long-haul routes is EVA Air best known for in the award travel community?
🇹🇼 Taipei to Los Angeles (TPE-LAX)
🇹🇼 Taipei to London (TPE-LHR)
🇹🇼 Taipei to Sydney (TPE-SYD)
🇹🇼 Taipei to Paris (TPE-CDG)
The answer is waiting near the bottom of today's newsletter... keep scrolling. 👇
✈️ Capital One Just Made EVA Air Almost Worth It
Capital One's transfer program has always had an awkward problem: the ratio to EVA Air Infinity MileageLands is significantly worse than 1:1, which made transfers feel like throwing points into a blender. That changes today.
A new 30% transfer bonus is live right now between Capital One and EVA Air - and crucially, that bonus gets the effective ratio to very close to 1:1. For the first time, transferring Capital One miles to EVA Air actually makes mathematical sense.
Why EVA Air Award Space Is the Secret Worth Knowing
Here's what makes this unusually valuable: EVA Air releases most of its long-haul business class award space exclusively to Infinity MileageLands members first. Partner programs often see very limited or no availability on the same flights. That means having MileageLands points - rather than points in another program - can be the difference between finding Business Class to Taipei and staring at a blank calendar.
The bonus hasn't published an expiry date yet, so treat it as time-sensitive. If you've been sitting on Capital One miles and have a transpacific trip on your horizon, this is worth running the numbers on before the window closes.

🏨 Hyatt Gave Someone Their Points Back - Then Sent a $3,690 Invoice
This one is genuinely alarming. A Hyatt member canceled a two-night award stay, got their points fully refunded - and then received a $3,690 cash cancellation charge in the mail. Not a typo. Not a misunderstanding. A real invoice for a real dollar amount, on a stay that cost them zero dollars to book.
Here's what's happening: some Hyatt properties have cancellation policies that include a cash penalty calculated against the retail value of the stay - even when you booked with points or a free night certificate. The points come back. The cash charge is separate. And in most cases, this isn't clearly disclosed at the time of booking.
How to Protect Yourself Before You Book
The rule is simple but easy to overlook: before booking any award stay, scroll all the way down to the cancellation policy and read the full text - not just the 'cancel by X date' headline. If you see language about 'room rate' or 'nightly rate forfeiture,' that's the trap. The cash amount in those clauses can be hundreds or thousands of dollars for luxury properties.
This story broke yesterday and it's already generating significant discussion in the points community. It connects to something we covered last week about hotels running schemes to get paid more on award nights - the broader theme here is that award bookings are not always as straightforward as they appear.
Award stays feel free until you read the fine print. That $3,690 invoice is a reminder that 'free' is a relative term in the hotel loyalty world.
🚨 Deal Alert: Bilt Rent Day 200% Hilton Bonus Ends Tonight
Today is the first of the month, which means Bilt Rent Day is live - and the headline offer is a 200% transfer bonus from Bilt to Hilton Honors. That's not a misprint: every 1,000 Bilt points becomes 3,000 Hilton Honors points. This is the single best Hilton transfer ratio available right now from any program, and it ends tonight.
If you've been accumulating Bilt points with an eye on a Hilton stay, this is the moment. The bonus also comes alongside Bilt Rent Day gift card promotions and Hilton-specific earning boosts if you make purchases through Bilt today. There's no code needed - the bonus applies automatically to transfers made on July 1st.
Reminder: the Amex to Hilton 20% transfer bonus is also still live through July 14th - so if you hold Membership Rewards points, that's a separate (though smaller) opportunity sitting alongside today's Bilt deal.
💳 Chase Freedom Flex Q3 2026: 5x Points Starting Today
Q3 2026 is officially here, and the Chase Freedom Flex has just activated its new quarterly bonus categories. From today through September 30th, you can earn 5x points on gas stations and EV charging stations on up to $1,500 in combined spending - that's a maximum of 7,500 bonus points per quarter just from filling your tank.
There's a critical step most people forget: you have to register. The bonus doesn't activate automatically. Head to Chase's website or app, find the Freedom Flex quarterly activation, and register now. Takes under 60 seconds and is worth doing before you forget.
The Stack That Makes This More Interesting
For those running the two-card Chase Sapphire strategy - pairing the Freedom Flex with a Sapphire Reserve or Preferred - these 5x points are earned as Ultimate Rewards points that can then transfer to airline and hotel partners. The Virgin Atlantic 30% transfer bonus from Chase is still live through July 14th, which means Freedom Flex gas spending today could end up as business class seats at a meaningful discount.
✈️ Lufthansa First Class Partner Bookings: A Door That May Be Closed for Good
If you've been planning to book Lufthansa First Class through a partner program - think United MileagePlus, Air Canada Aeroplan, or similar - here's a difficult update: the availability that disappeared on June 1st still hasn't returned, more than a month later.
Before June 1st, partner availability for Lufthansa First was already rare - you typically had to pounce within 72 hours of departure. But now there's essentially nothing showing for partners, and the pattern suggests this isn't a temporary glitch. Lufthansa may be keeping its First Class awards entirely within its own Miles and More program.
What This Changes for Your Premium Cabin Strategy
If a Lufthansa First redemption was on your wish list, the realistic path now requires Miles and More points directly. The good news: there's currently a 50% bonus when you buy Miles and More miles, running through July 31st. It's not the ideal way to acquire points, but if you have a specific itinerary in mind and need miles to make it work, the math is at least more favorable right now than it will be in August.
Our friends at Award Travel Finder have been tracking premium cabin availability across programs - worth checking there if you're flexible on the exact carrier for a European first class experience.
💰 Last Chance: A Few Offers Worth Acting On Today
A few deadlines worth keeping on your radar right now, beyond the Bilt Rent Day bonus above:
The Virgin Atlantic buy-points 70% bonus ends this Tuesday, July 7th - in just 6 days. If you're targeting a Virgin Atlantic redemption and need to top up your Flying Club balance, this is the best buying opportunity available right now. The Chase to Virgin Atlantic 30% transfer bonus (ending July 14th) and the Amex to Virgin Atlantic 30% bonus (ending July 31st) both remain live as alternatives if you'd rather not spend cash.
The Alaska Airlines 100% buy-points bonus through Atmos Rewards also runs out this Sunday, July 5th. Alaska Mileage Plan is one of the most underrated programs for international partner redemptions, so if that's on your radar, this weekend is the window.
See the full list of active buy-points promotions before any of these slip away.
🌎 Trivia Reveal
The answer is: Taipei to Los Angeles (TPE-LAX).
The TPE-LAX route in EVA Air's Royal Laurel Business Class is considered one of the best value premium cabin awards in the transpacific market - consistently praised for hard-shell lie-flat seats, outstanding service, and generous award availability for MileageLands members. That's exactly why the Capital One 30% bonus to EVA Air matters: it gets you meaningfully closer to booking that cabin without paying cash.
💬 Quick Question
Today's Hyatt cancellation story raised a question I'm genuinely curious about: have you ever been hit with an unexpected fee or charge on an award booking - hotel or airline? It doesn't have to be as dramatic as $3,690. Even a surprise tax or resort fee you didn't see coming counts. Hit reply and tell me what happened - I read every single response and your stories often become future newsletter items!
Happy July 1st - the first of the month means Bilt Rent Day bonuses, new quarterly categories, and apparently a very important lesson about Hyatt's fine print. Don't let today's Bilt deadline pass without at least checking whether it's useful for you. More tomorrow.
