☀️ TRENDING MILES & POINTS NEWS

  • 💳 Chase Sapphire Preferred is officially retiring its 10% anniversary points bonus - effective immediately

  • ✈️ Frontier Airlines aborted takeoff at Denver after hitting a pedestrian on the runway - 231 people onboard evacuated via slides

  • 💳 Citi Strata Elite card launches with 75,000 points plus up to $1,200 in first-year travel credits

  • 🚨 Transfer Bonus Alert: Chase to Marriott Bonvoy at +65% bonus ends May 15 - and Amex to JetBlue at +10% ends tomorrow, May 11

Something quietly disappeared from Chase's website this week - and if you hold the Sapphire Preferred, you're going to want to know about it before your next card anniversary rolls around.

🤓 Miles & Points Trivia

The Chase Sapphire Preferred's retiring anniversary bonus gave cardholders a percentage of their prior year's spending back as points each year. What was that percentage?

  • 🅰️ 5%

  • 🅱️ 10%

  • 🅲️ 15%

  • 🅳️ 20%

The answer is waiting near the bottom of today's newsletter... keep scrolling. 👇

💳 Chase Just Quietly Axed One of the Sapphire Preferred's Best Perks

No press release. No email to cardholders. Chase simply updated its website to confirm that the Anniversary Bonus on the Chase Sapphire Preferred is being retired.

What's Actually Being Removed

The perk gave cardholders bonus points equal to 10% of all points earned on the card during the previous year. So if you earned 50,000 points from spending and bonuses, you'd get an automatic 5,000-point top-up on your card anniversary. Small, but genuinely free - and the kind of perk that rewarded loyal, active cardholders.

The card still earns 3x on dining and online groceries, 2x on travel, and comes with a $50 annual hotel credit via Chase Travel. But that passive anniversary bonus? Gone.

The bigger picture here is that the Sapphire Preferred carries a $95 annual fee and has been competing directly with newer cards that offer richer earning structures. This removal makes the value proposition a bit thinner - especially if you've been leaning on that annual top-up as part of your calculation.

✈️ Frontier Pilot Aborts Takeoff After Hitting a Pedestrian on the Denver Runway

'We Just Hit Somebody'

Late on Friday night, a Frontier Airlines Airbus A321neo with 231 people onboard was rolling down Runway 17L at Denver International Airport when the flight crew transmitted five words that stopped air traffic control cold: 'We just hit somebody.'

A pedestrian had been walking across the active runway. The crew aborted the takeoff immediately, declared an emergency, and the aircraft was evacuated via slides. The flight had been scheduled to operate from Denver to Los Angeles.

Details on how a pedestrian gained access to an active runway at one of the busiest airports in the country are still emerging. This is genuinely alarming from a safety standpoint - runway incursions are one of the highest-risk events in aviation, and this one involved a person on foot during a live departure roll. Expect the FAA and the NTSB to be all over this one.

💳 The Citi Strata Elite Quietly Became Worth Talking About

Citi's new Strata Elite card doesn't get the marketing push that Chase and Amex throw behind their flagship products - but the first-year numbers are hard to ignore.

75,000 Points Plus $1,200 in Credits

New cardholders can currently earn 75,000 ThankYou points after meeting the spending requirement, plus access up to $1,200 in travel credits during the first year. And crucially, those ThankYou points now transfer directly to American Airlines AAdvantage - which opens up a lot of redemption options, especially with the Capital One to Qantas +20% transfer bonus currently running through May 31.

Speaking of AAdvantage - American and Qantas are also running a promotion where AAdvantage members can earn up to 25,000 bonus miles on eligible flights to Australia and New Zealand. If a trip Down Under is on your radar, that's a rare double-dip: earn bonus miles on the flight AND potentially transfer ThankYou points into your AAdvantage account to cover it.

It's also worth noting that Citi ThankYou Rewards currently has a +25% transfer bonus to Leading Hotels of the World running through May 16 - another reason to keep your ThankYou balance healthy right now. You can track all active transfer bonuses in one place on our transfer bonuses page.

🏨 GHA Discovery Is Selling Titanium and Platinum Status Right Now

GHA Discovery doesn't get the same airtime as Hyatt or Marriott, but it probably should. The program covers hundreds of properties across some genuinely special boutique and luxury hotel groups - including Capella Hotels and Resorts.

Paid Status, Real Perks

GHA has just brought back a paid status match promotion that lets you fast-track your way to Titanium or Platinum status without the usual qualifying stays. For anyone who travels internationally and wants more flexibility than the big three programs offer, this is worth a look.

The fact that this keeps coming back suggests demand is strong. If you've been curious about GHA but never had a reason to engage with it seriously, a paid status path is about as low-friction as it gets.

🚨 Deal Alert: 8 Minutes at DFW and One Very Useful American Airlines Trick

This one isn't a points deal - but it might save your trip. A traveler running an 8-minute connection at Dallas Fort Worth between Terminal A Gate 37 and Terminal D Gate 40 shared the exact playbook that got them home: skip the Skylink at peak times, and get American to flag a backup flight before you even leave the gate.

DFW connections are notorious. If you're flying through Dallas anytime soon, you can check real-time security and terminal wait times at DFW using FlightQueue before you travel - it's genuinely useful for planning your buffer.

💰 One Transfer Bonus Ends Tomorrow - Don't Miss It

The Amex Membership Rewards to JetBlue +10% transfer bonus expires tomorrow, May 11. It's not the most dramatic bonus on the board, but if you've been planning a JetBlue redemption, transferring before midnight tonight means getting more points for the same Amex balance. The Amex to Hilton +20% bonus runs a bit longer, through May 30.

The one that deserves the most urgency right now is the Chase Ultimate Rewards to Marriott Bonvoy +65% bonus - that ends May 15. Sixty-five percent is unusually high for a Marriott transfer, and if you've been sitting on Chase points with a Bonvoy stay on the horizon, the math gets materially better this week versus next.

The +65% Chase to Marriott Bonvoy transfer bonus ends May 15. That's not a typo - 65% extra points on every transfer this week.

Award Travel Finder has been tracking some strong Marriott award availability alongside this bonus - worth checking if a hotel stay is on your radar before the bonus window closes.

🛒 Chase Business Checking: $500 for a $2,000 Deposit

Quick non-points mention that's too good to skip: Chase is offering a $500 bonus for new Business Checking accounts with a $2,000 deposit. The money only needs to stay in the account for roughly 30-35 days, there's no direct deposit requirement, and the activity threshold is very low.

That's a 25% return on $2,000 in about a month. If you have a business entity and haven't opened a Chase business checking account yet, this is one of the better deposit bonuses available right now.

🌎 Trivia Reveal

The answer is 🅱️ 10%. The Chase Sapphire Preferred's Anniversary Bonus returned 10% of all points earned in the prior cardmember year. So if you racked up 60,000 points in year one, you'd receive a 6,000-point anniversary bonus automatically. It was one of the quieter perks that rewarded active cardholders - and now it's gone.

💬 Quick Question

The Chase Sapphire Preferred just got a little less generous. Does the loss of the 10% anniversary bonus change how you think about the card - or are you sticking with it regardless? Hit reply and let me know your take. I read every response and genuinely want to know how you're thinking about your Chase setup right now.

The Frontier story is going to keep developing - a pedestrian on an active runway during a departure roll is a serious breakdown somewhere in the system. I'll be watching for the investigation findings.

And don't forget: the Chase to Marriott +65% transfer bonus ends Thursday. That one's worth acting on before the week gets away from you.
