Something quietly shifted in the loyalty world overnight - and two of today's stories have a direct impact on how much your points are actually worth.
Hyatt's new award chart is officially live as of today, which means the valuations you've been working with are already outdated. And separately, a Reddit post from a Hilton hotel employee has pulled back the curtain on a scam that's been running at properties across multiple chains - one that costs loyalty programs millions and quietly erodes the value of your redemptions.
Let's get into it.
🤓 Miles & Points Trivia
Hyatt's new award chart is live today. But roughly how many World of Hyatt categories exist under the updated pricing structure?
🅰️ 5 categories
🅱️ 7 categories
🅲️ 8 categories
🅳️ 12 categories
The answer is waiting near the bottom of today's newsletter... keep scrolling. 👇
🏨 Hyatt Points Just Got Recalculated - Here's the New Math
Hyatt's updated award chart went live today, and the big question on everyone's mind is: are my points worth more or less than they were yesterday?
Frequent Miler updated their Reasonable Redemption Values to reflect the new pricing. Their framework estimates the value at which it's "reasonable" to get that much - or more - from your points. This is the number you want in your head when you're deciding whether to transfer, redeem, or hold.
Why the New Valuations Matter Right Now
If you've been sitting on a stockpile of World of Hyatt points, today is a good day to recalibrate. With the new chart live, some properties have shifted tiers - meaning certain redemptions that looked like sweet spots last week may have changed. Our Hyatt Points Calculator is worth checking before you book anything.
And if you're planning to transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards to Hyatt - the Chase to Marriott +55% transfer bonus dies tonight, but the Chase to Hyatt transfer remains one of the cleanest 1:1 conversions in the business. No bonus needed when the underlying value is this strong.
🚨 The Hotel Award Scam Nobody's Talking About
A Reddit post from a Hilton hotel employee is making the rounds today - and it's genuinely worth your attention. The employee is asking whether they should report their property to Hilton corporate for running a scheme to get overpaid on award stays.
How the Scam Actually Works
Here's the setup: when you redeem points for a hotel stay, the loyalty program reimburses the property at a negotiated rate. Some hotels manipulate the system by artificially inflating room rates or misclassifying stays to trigger higher reimbursements from the program. You pay the same number of points - but the hotel extracts more money from the loyalty pool than it's entitled to.
This isn't a one-hotel problem. One Mile at a Time notes this pattern has surfaced across multiple chains repeatedly. The direct consequence for you: every fraudulent overpayment chips away at the economics that fund award availability and point valuations.
When hotels game the reimbursement system, the loyalty program eventually passes that cost back to members through devaluations and tighter award availability.
The takeaway here isn't that you should panic about your next redemption. It's worth knowing that the system has structural vulnerabilities - and that when you see award redemptions quietly getting harder or more expensive, this is part of why.
✈️ United's New Turks and Caicos Route - And the Points Hotels Opening There
United Airlines has filed plans to launch nonstop service to Turks and Caicos from its Denver hub - and the timing isn't coincidental. The island is in the middle of a luxury hotel boom, with a new Marriott Bonvoy resort already open and a World of Hyatt property currently under construction.
Denver to Providenciales - A Route That Opens Up Options
Denver isn't the first city you'd think of for a Caribbean beach connection, but as United's hub there continues to grow, this route plugs a genuine gap. For points travelers, the combination of new United award availability to Turks and Caicos - plus fresh Marriott and Hyatt properties to redeem at on arrival - creates an end-to-end redemption story that didn't exist six months ago.
Award Travel Finder has been tracking Caribbean award availability closely - worth a check once United files the official route dates and seats open up for booking.
💳 Chase Sapphire Preferred at 100,000 Points - The Case for Not Upgrading
The Chase Sapphire Preferred's elevated 100,000-point welcome offer is live, and a perspective worth sharing: you don't always need to chase the more premium card.
The Sapphire Preferred earns 3x on dining, 2x on travel, covers Airbnb purchases at an elevated rate, and now comes with a solid set of travel protections - all for a $95 annual fee. The Sapphire Reserve is a great card, but at $795 it takes serious annual spend to justify the delta. For most travelers, the Preferred hits a sweet spot that the Reserve can't match on pure economics.
The 100,000-point bonus alone is worth at minimum $1,250 through Chase Travel, and considerably more if you transfer to partners like Hyatt or Virgin Atlantic (where a 30% transfer bonus runs through July 14). If you've been on the fence, the math has rarely looked this clean for the Preferred tier.
🚨 Deal Alert: Transfer Bonuses Dying Tonight at Midnight
Three significant transfer bonuses expire tonight - and one of them is genuinely worth moving quickly on.
The Chase Ultimate Rewards to Marriott Bonvoy +55% bonus ends tonight. That's one of the highest Chase transfer bonuses to Marriott we've seen - if you have Chase points and have been considering a Marriott redemption, tonight is the last window. Similarly, Amex Membership Rewards to Flying Blue (+25%) and Amex to Marriott (+20%) both close tonight.
The full picture of what's live - and what's dying - is on our transfer bonuses tracker. There are still 10 active bonuses running past tonight, including a 30% Amex to Virgin Atlantic bonus through July 31 and a 55% Chase to Virgin Atlantic bonus through July 14.
🛒 Buy Points Before These Offers Disappear
On the buy-points side, Air Canada Aeroplan is offering a 30% discount on purchased miles - but that ends tonight too. If you have an Aeroplan redemption in mind, this is your last window at the discounted rate.
Still running after today: Virgin Atlantic is offering a 70% buy-points bonus through next Tuesday (July 7), Alaska Airlines has a 100% bonus through this Sunday, and JetBlue's 125% bonus runs all the way to August 9. All current offers are tracked at our buy points promotions page.
Not sure if buying makes sense for your specific redemption? The math depends on what you're trying to book. Friday Flight Deals also runs cash fare alerts if you'd rather skip the points math entirely this week.
🌎 Trivia Reveal
The answer: Hyatt's updated award chart uses 8 categories (plus standard and peak/off-peak pricing within each). If you guessed 🅲️ 8 categories - well done.
The practical implication: some properties you've been eyeing may have shifted categories under the new chart. Always confirm the current category before transferring points - what you researched two weeks ago may not match what's live today.
💬 Quick Question
The hotel award scam story today got me thinking - have you ever had a points redemption feel "off" at a hotel? Maybe a stay that didn't add up or a property that seemed to underdeliver compared to what the points should have bought? Hit reply and tell me about it - I read every response and it helps me spot patterns worth writing about.
The hotel loyalty economics story is one I'll keep pulling on - your firsthand experiences genuinely help shape the coverage.
Hyatt's new chart being live on the same day that hotel award fraud surfaces in the news is a strange kind of symmetry. One story is about recalibrating value, the other is about why that value is under quiet pressure. Worth keeping both in mind the next time you're deciding where to park your points.
