Let's get into it.

🤓 Miles & Points Trivia

Alaska Airlines just completed its first-ever transatlantic flight. Which city did that inaugural flight land in?

  • 🇬🇧 London Heathrow

  • 🇮🇹 Rome

  • 🇩🇪 Frankfurt

  • 🇫🇷 Paris Charles de Gaulle

The answer is waiting near the bottom of today's newsletter... keep scrolling. 👇

✈️ Alaska Airlines Just Touched Down in Europe - For the First Time Ever

This is genuinely a historic moment in U.S. aviation. Yesterday, Alaska Airlines landed in Rome, completing the carrier's first-ever transatlantic flight. For a Seattle-based airline that built its reputation on Pacific Northwest routes, this is a significant leap onto the global stage.

The Pacific Northwest Goes Transatlantic

Alaska has been quietly building a long-haul network out of Seattle-Tacoma, and this Rome launch is the clearest signal yet that the carrier is positioning itself as a fourth true global U.S. airline alongside American, Delta, and United.

To match the moment, Alaska is also opening its most exclusive check-in facility at SeaTac - a dedicated Titanium and Suite check-in area with private security access. It's the kind of premium airport experience previously reserved for carriers like Emirates and Cathay. If you're tracking Alaska's Atmos Rewards program, Titanium elites also just unlocked global upgrades, which is a legitimately compelling reason to pursue top-tier status with the airline.

For award travelers, the big question is whether Alaska's new European routes open up interesting redemption angles. Award Travel Finder is already tracking availability across Alaska's network - worth checking if Rome or other upcoming European destinations are on your list.

🏨 Hyatt's Devaluation Is Bad - Here's Exactly How Bad

May 20th is circled in red on the calendar for World of Hyatt members. That's when Hyatt's wide-ranging devaluation takes effect, and now that the full award chart details are public, a proper analysis is in. The short version: it's rough.

What's Actually Changing on May 20th

Category changes across hundreds of properties will push many popular hotels into higher award tiers - meaning more points required per night. The devaluation hits popular leisure destinations particularly hard, which is where most members want to use their points anyway. There are a few bright spots buried in the data, but they're outnumbered by the bad news.

If you've been sitting on Hyatt points and have a stay booked at a property that's moving up a category on May 20th, book it NOW. Existing bookings at current rates should be honored, but you need to have the reservation made before the change takes effect.

This is one of those cases where acting before a deadline has real, calculable value. Use our Hyatt Points Calculator to check what your points are worth today versus what they'll be worth after the change.

Also worth knowing: if you have Chase Ultimate Rewards points, Hyatt is a 1:1 transfer partner. That's one of the most consistently high-value transfers in the Chase ecosystem - but with the devaluation coming, the math shifts. Lock in your Hyatt bookings before May 20th if you can. See all our Hyatt coverage here.

✈️ Delta Is Taking Away Free CLEAR+ from Diamond Medallions

Delta Diamond Medallion status has long come with a complimentary CLEAR+ membership - one of the more tangible everyday perks of being at the top of the SkyMiles elite ladder. Starting June 1, 2026, that benefit disappears.

From Complimentary to $129 a Year

New memberships and renewals from June 1st onward will be charged at $129 per year - down from the standard $199 retail price, so Delta is framing it as a discounted rate rather than a removal. But let's be clear: Diamond Medallion is the highest published tier in Delta's elite program. Taking away a benefit that was previously free and replacing it with a $129 annual charge is a cut, regardless of how it's positioned.

For frequent flyers who have already been using CLEAR+ through their Delta status, this is worth factoring into your annual elite status math. If you hold Diamond status primarily for perks like this one, the calculus may have just shifted. Check out our full Delta coverage for more on how SkyMiles elite benefits are evolving.

✈️ American Airlines Admits Its Planes Have a Duct Tape Problem

Here's something you don't often see: an airline publicly acknowledging that its aircraft interiors are in rough shape. American Airlines' customer chief Heather Garboden told employees directly that the airline has 'too many broken seats,' bad inflight entertainment screens, and duct tape in places duct tape absolutely should not be.

A Dedicated Fix Team and a Summer Deadline

The acknowledgment comes with a plan. American is building a dedicated Tech Ops team specifically to address aircraft interior maintenance, with visible improvements expected by the end of summer 2026. It's a rare moment of candor from a major carrier, and frankly, it's the right call - passengers have been noticing for years.

This connects to a broader pattern we've been tracking with American. The airline has been working through a difficult stretch - earlier this week we covered the pressure on loyal flyers - and interior quality is one area where the gap between promise and reality has been hardest to ignore. Follow all our American Airlines coverage for updates as the summer deadline approaches.

If you got it right, well done - and if you didn't, now you know what to expect next time someone asks you about aviation history over dinner.
