We're talking meaningful jumps on partner-operated itineraries, particularly on flights involving connections.

As part of the Hawaiian Airlines acquisition, Alaska made commitments not to devalue its miles - but those protections apply to Alaska-operated flights, not partner awards. And the award charts themselves aren't specifically protected, only a minimum value per mile guarantee.

That legal distinction is significant. If this turns out to be a permanent pricing change rather than a technical glitch, it would represent a notable devaluation for anyone relying on Alaska miles to book partner carriers.

Alaska also has a buy miles promotion running right now - a 90% bonus at 1.98 cents per mile, ending March 18. Given the uncertainty around partner award pricing, I'd hold off on purchasing until this situation clarifies.

Q2 starts April 1, and Chase has opened registration for the Chase Freedom Flex's bonus categories. This quarter features Amazon, Chase Travel, Feeding America, and Whole Foods - all at 5 points per dollar on up to $1,500 in combined spending.

Amazon at 5x is where the real volume is for most people. If you run even modest Amazon spending through Q2, this alone could net you thousands of points.
