Something quietly shifted in the loyalty world this week - and two of the changes are the kind that catch people off guard months later when they try to book a trip or cancel a card. Let's get into it.

The Card Shortcut Is Gone

Southwest Airlines announced a complete overhaul of its Rapid Rewards loyalty program coming in 2027, and the headline is ugly if you've been gaming the Companion Pass through credit card spending. The old setup let you count credit card welcome bonuses toward the 135,000 points needed for the pass - meaning a savvy applicant could snag it with minimal flying. That shortcut is going away.

The new program introduces three elite tiers. A-List becomes Silver, A-List Preferred becomes Gold, and a new Platinum tier sits at the top. The Companion Pass moves to tier qualifying points: three Companion Pass trips take 95,000 tier qualifying points or 75 one-way flights, while Platinum, with unlimited Companion Pass trips, requires 140,000 or 100 flights. Partner award redemptions with Icelandair, Etihad Airways and China Airlines begin in spring 2027. Southwest hasn't published full pricing or booking details yet, but the direction is clear: a more traditional frequent flyer model and away from the points-for-everyone approach that made the program distinctive.

What This Overhaul Actually Signals

The bottom line

The changes take effect January 1, 2027, so today's Companion Pass rules still apply. There is one date to watch. According to View from the Wing, credit card welcome bonuses stop counting toward 2027 Companion Pass activity, except for cards approved on or before December 2, 2026, whose initial bonus can still count. How that exception will be administered isn't clear yet. If a Southwest card has been on your radar for the pass, December 2 is the deadline to plan around.

A Change That Bites You Months Later

American Express has changed how Membership Rewards points are pooled between accounts. Previously, when you opened a new Amex card, it automatically joined your existing MR pool - meaning all your points sat together and were protected when you closed any one card. That's no longer happening for new cards opened going forward.

New Amex cards now get their own separate Membership Rewards account by default. You can still manually link them together, but if you don't - and then you cancel a card - that separate balance could evaporate. View from the Wing flagged this and made the important point: if you have an older card keeping your main MR account alive, and a newer card with its own separate pool, closing the newer card could wipe out points you thought were safe.

How to Protect Your Balance Right Now

Log into your Amex account and check whether any of your cards have separate MR balances that aren't linked to your main account. If you're planning to cancel any card soon, verify the points situation first. The fix is straightforward - link accounts before canceling - but only if you know to look for it. This is the kind of quiet policy change that costs people thousands of points when they're not paying attention.

🌏 Singapore KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes: 30% Off Awards in November

Award Discounts on One of the World's Best Airlines

Singapore Airlines has published its November KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes list, with 30% off selected award flights for travel from November 1 to 30, 2026. Bookings close October 31, so this is a short window. The October list has already closed for booking.

If you have KrisFlyer miles and a flexible schedule, search now. The routes on offer change each month, so check the November list directly rather than relying on the October route list.

The bottom line

The 30% discount is a strong reason to look at Singapore Airlines award space this month, especially on flights you were already considering. Check the November list before the October 31 booking deadline, because these windows don't roll over.

🚨 Deal Alert: Rove Miles Now Transfer to JetBlue With a 20% Bonus

Rove added JetBlue as a 1:1 transfer partner this week, and to celebrate, they're running a 20% transfer bonus through November 14. That means for every 1,000 Rove Miles you transfer, you get 1,200 JetBlue TrueBlue points. View from the Wing noted that to make the math work, ordinary JetBlue tickets need to beat the roughly 1.5 cents per Rove Mile you'd get booking through their portal directly - so this is most useful for partner business class awards where TrueBlue points can shine.

The JetBlue bonus runs through November 14 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern, and transfers from Rove to TrueBlue are 1:1. If you have Rove Miles, decide where they should go before that deadline. Explore Rove Miles

💰 Transfer Bonuses Worth Acting On This Weekend

A few transfer bonuses are worth flagging before the weekend. The Citi to JAL bonus is at 30% and the Citi to Avianca LifeMiles bonus is at 25% - both end next Saturday, October 24. JAL in particular is a strong partner for premium cabin awards to Japan and Asia. We covered the Citi-to-JAL business class angle in detail a few weeks back - worth revisiting if you're planning a trip to that region.

On the buy-points side, the Avianca LifeMiles 145% bonus is one of the best we've seen all year and ends this Tuesday, October 20. Alaska Atmos Rewards has a 110% buy bonus ending this Monday, October 19. Both are worth a look if you have a specific redemption in mind. Check the full list of live buy-points promotions before the Monday and Tuesday deadlines hit.

🌎 Trivia Reveal

The answer is 30%. Singapore Airlines' October KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes list offered 30% off selected awards in economy, premium economy and business class. The November list is the one open for booking now, with a booking deadline of October 31.

💬 Quick Question

Southwest's Companion Pass is one of the most talked-about deals in points and miles. Have you ever earned it - or tried to? I'm curious how many of you have used the card spending shortcut before it disappears. Hit reply and let me know - I read every single response!

That's it from me today. Southwest becoming just another airline is a slow-motion story, but this week's announcement made it feel a lot more real. And that Amex pooling change is the kind of thing that will quietly bite people who aren't paying close attention - hopefully this gets it on your radar before it costs you anything.
