Something quietly shifted in the loyalty world yesterday - and if you fly United even occasionally, you need to know what just changed.
United's MileagePlus overhaul went live, and the program is now openly two-tiered: cardholders get faster earning, cheaper award prices, and better access to saver inventory. Everyone else gets a noticeably worse deal. It's not subtle. And United chose this exact moment to dangle a 110,000-mile welcome offer in front of you. Coincidence? Not a chance.
We've also got Citi quietly launching not one but two transfer bonuses this week, an Apple shopping portal deal that expires tonight, and a new Marriott Bonvoy property worth knowing about. Let's get into it.
🤓 Miles & Points Trivia
United MileagePlus cardholders now get preferential access to a specific award type that non-cardholders have reduced access to. Which award type is it?

✈️ United Just Made a Credit Card Mandatory for the Best MileagePlus Deals
What Flipped Overnight
The United MileagePlus changes that were announced a while back are now officially live - and the program has made no secret of what it's doing. Cardholders earn miles faster, access cheaper United award prices, and get better visibility into saver award inventory. Non-cardholders, meanwhile, earn at a reduced rate and effectively lose access to the best-priced awards on United metal.
This is a significant structural shift. United is essentially saying: if you want to play at the top of this program, you need a co-brand card. It's a strategy Delta and American have been nudging toward for years, but United is being the most explicit about it.
110,000 Miles Right Now - But Read the Fine Print
The timing of the welcome offer is telling. United and Chase are currently offering up to 110,000 MileagePlus miles to new cardholders - a strong number that's clearly designed to capture people who just learned they're getting a worse deal without a card. If you've been on the fence about a United card, this is the most compelling moment to evaluate it.
Not sure how far those 110,000 miles actually go? Run the numbers with the United Miles Calculator before you decide whether this welcome offer is worth applying for.
💳 Citi Just Launched Two Transfer Bonuses at Once
Two Programs, Two Bonuses, One Deadline
Citi ThankYou quietly launched not one but two transfer bonuses this week. First, there's a 25% bonus on transfers to Wyndham Rewards, valid through June 13, 2026. Normally 1,000 ThankYou points transfers to 1,000 Wyndham points - with this bonus, you get 1,250 instead.
Second, there's a 30% bonus on transfers to Preferred Hotels iPreferred, also running through June 13. That takes a 1,000-point transfer from 2,000 iPreferred points up to 2,600 points.
The Honest Take on Both Bonuses
Here's the thing worth knowing: neither of these is a slam dunk. The Preferred Hotels bonus looks good on paper, but the underlying transfer ratio was recently reduced - so the 30% bonus doesn't actually get you back to the old rate. You're still worse off than you were before the devaluation. It may still work for someone with a specific stay in mind at an iPreferred property, but going in with eyes open matters.
The Wyndham bonus is more straightforward. If you have a Wyndham redemption in mind - a free night at a Wyndham property, say - the 25% uplift is real value. Wyndham's footprint is massive and there are some solid sweet spots, particularly for budget travelers and road trippers.
The 30% iPreferred bonus sounds great until you realize the base transfer ratio was cut recently. You're still behind where you started.

🛒 Today Only: 4x Miles on Apple Purchases Through Shopping Portals
The One-Day Window
This is the kind of deal that rewards people who have the habit of checking portals before every purchase. Today only, select airline shopping portals are offering up to 4x bonus miles on Apple purchases. That means buying a MacBook, iPhone, iPad, or any Apple product through the right portal could generate a meaningful chunk of miles on a purchase you were already planning.
The key is to check which portal has the best rate for your preferred program before you buy - rates vary across portals. If you were already eyeing an Apple purchase, today is the day to move on it. Once midnight hits, this offer disappears.

🏨 The W Just Opened on a Sardinian Cliff - Here's How to Book It with Points
Private Marina, Mediterranean Views, 157 Rooms
Marriott Bonvoy just got a genuinely exciting new property: the W Sardinia - Poltu Quatu has officially opened on Sardinia's northeast coast, carved into natural granite cliffs with a private marina and a view that probably belongs in a travel magazine. After a soft opening in 2025, it's now fully live and bookable.
For points travelers, this is a W Hotels property which means Marriott Bonvoy redemptions apply. Italy has been getting harder to find great points properties in popular tourist areas, so a new high-end opening on Sardinia - especially one that coincides with Delta launching direct flights to the island - is worth flagging. Award Travel Finder is a great place to start if you want to check availability before rates creep up.
🚨 Deal Alert: Buy United Miles at Half Price Through June 24
Given the MileagePlus changes that just went live, this timing is interesting. United is currently running a 100% bonus on purchased miles through June 24, 2026 - effectively cutting the per-mile cost in half to around 1.88 cents per mile. If you're a cardholder who now gets access to preferential saver award pricing, buying miles to top up for a specific redemption just got more defensible. Check the full breakdown on the buy points tracker before pulling the trigger.
💰 Current Offers & Bonuses Worth Knowing
A few live offers that are worth stacking against today's news:
Chase Ultimate Rewards to Air France/KLM Flying Blue is running a 20% transfer bonus through May 27 - one of the better programs for European redemptions. Amex Membership Rewards to Hilton has a 20% bonus running through May 30. And Capital One Miles to Qantas Frequent Flyer has a 20% bonus live through May 31.
On the buy side: JetBlue is running a 125% bonus on purchased TrueBlue points through June 10, which at 1.43 cents per point is the cheapest JetBlue has been in a while. Flying Blue miles are available at 80% bonus through May 31 at 1.69 cents - genuinely useful if you have a specific Air France or KLM redemption lined up. 🌎 Trivia Reveal
The answer is: 💺 Saver Awards. United MileagePlus cardholders now get better access to saver award inventory - the lowest-priced awards on United metal - while non-cardholders have reduced visibility and access to those same seats. It's the clearest example of how the program has split into two tiers.
💬 Quick Question
The United MileagePlus changes put a real question in front of a lot of travelers today: do you hold a United co-brand card, or are you shopping the program without one? I'm curious how many of you are now reconsidering your setup after yesterday's changes went live. Hit reply and tell me - do you fly United regularly enough that a co-brand card makes sense, or are you sticking with transferable points programs instead? I read every reply.
That's a lot of change packed into one Tuesday. The United move is the one I'd focus on first - if you fly United even a few times a year, the math on holding a co-brand card just shifted meaningfully. The Citi bonuses are real but nuanced, and the Apple portal deal is tonight-or-never.
