Picture this: you scan your boarding pass, walk down the jet bridge, settle into your seat, answer the exit-row safety questions from the flight attendant, and mentally shift into travel mode. Then, after every single other passenger has boarded, an airline employee taps you on the shoulder and tells you to get off the plane.
That's exactly what happened to an American Airlines passenger recently - and the story gets stranger from there. Let's get into it.
🤓 Miles & Points Trivia
Which hotel chain's business card just hit a best-ever welcome bonus of 200,000 points?
🏨 Marriott Bonvoy
🏨 Hilton Honors
🏨 IHG One Rewards
🏨 World of Hyatt

✈️ American Airlines Boarded a Passenger - Then Kicked Them Off for a Standby Traveler
This one is genuinely hard to believe. An American Airlines passenger on a flight to Austin successfully scanned their boarding pass at the gate, walked onto the aircraft, took their assigned exit-row seat, answered the flight attendant's exit-row questions, and waited while the rest of the plane filled up.
After everyone else had boarded, an airline agent came down the aisle and told this passenger they somehow weren't checked in - and needed to leave. The kicker? The plane departed with empty seats. American gave the seat to a standby traveler, leaving the original ticketed passenger behind.
The Seat That Wasn't Theirs to Give Away
The passenger's boarding pass had already been scanned - meaning the system acknowledged their check-in at the door. How a standby traveler ends up in a seat belonging to someone already sitting in it, while empty seats exist on the same plane, is a question American hasn't cleanly answered.
This is the kind of customer service failure that erodes trust fast. If you fly American regularly, it might be worth double-checking your booking status before heading to the gate - and never assume that sitting down means the seat is secured.

🔧 United Maintenance Used a Coat Hanger on a Boeing 737 - Then Swapped the Jet
If you were boarding a United flight from Newark to Austin recently, you may have seen something that stopped you cold: a maintenance worker leaning out of the cockpit window with what passengers described as a coat hanger, prodding a sensor on the nose of the aircraft.
To be clear - United did not send out that aircraft. The flight operated on a swapped jet. But the image of someone improvising with a coat hanger on a commercial plane is... not ideal optics for Boeing or United right now.
The good news is the system worked as intended - the issue was flagged, the plane was taken out of service, and passengers were rebooked on a different aircraft. For more United news and updates, check out our United Airlines coverage here.
💳 Best-Ever 200,000-Point IHG Business Card Offer Is Back
Chase has revived the best-ever welcome bonus on the IHG One Rewards Premier Business card - 200,000 IHG points after meeting the minimum spend. At a $99 annual fee, this is one of the richest hotel card bonuses currently available anywhere on the market.
The card includes an annual free night certificate and the fourth-night-free perk on award stays, which means you can stretch those 200,000 points considerably further than their face value suggests. If you're a small-business owner who's been waiting for the right hotel card moment, this is it.
How Far Can 200,000 IHG Points Go?
IHG's portfolio includes InterContinental, Kimpton, and voco properties worldwide. With the fourth-night-free perk stacked on top of a 200,000-point balance, a long weekend at a premium IHG property - or multiple shorter stays - is genuinely within reach.
There's also an active Chase-to-IHG transfer bonus running right now: a 70% bonus when you move Chase Ultimate Rewards to IHG, valid through April 30, 2026. If you have Chase points sitting in a Sapphire or Ink account, this stacks nicely with the card's ongoing value. Check out the full list of current transfer bonuses here.
🚨 Deal Alert: Southwest's Double Points Weekend Ends Tonight
Southwest launched a targeted promotion offering double Rapid Rewards points on all flights booked by April 12th - that's today - for travel completed by July 1st, 2026. Registration is required before booking, but reports indicate nearly all Rapid Rewards members who've tried have been able to register successfully.
If you have Southwest flights already on your radar for spring or early summer, booking today locks in double points on those tickets. The promo is time-sensitive - the booking window closes at midnight.
Worth noting: there's also an active buy points offer on Southwest Rapid Rewards right now - a 40% discount at 1.8 cents per point, but that expires tomorrow, April 13th. If you're short on points and want to top up before booking, that window is closing fast. See all current buy points promotions.
Southwest's double points booking window closes tonight, April 12th - registration required before you book.

✈️ JetBlue Adds Fuel Surcharges to United Awards - A Trend Worth Watching
Here's a quiet change with potentially loud implications. JetBlue TrueBlue has started adding carrier-imposed fuel surcharges to United MileagePlus award bookings made through the Blue partnership between the two airlines.
JetBlue and United operate a partnership that allows reciprocal earning and redemption. But with oil prices pushing up costs across the board, JetBlue is now passing those fees along to members redeeming United miles on JetBlue flights - a move that effectively reduces the value of those awards without technically changing the points price.
Why This Sets a Worrying Precedent
The concern here isn't just JetBlue and United - it's what this signals more broadly. If one airline partner can layer surcharges onto another program's award bookings, the door opens for others to follow. Award redemptions that look clean on the surface could start hiding fees underneath.
If you're planning to redeem United miles on JetBlue flights, factor in that the out-of-pocket cost is now higher than the points price suggests. Use our United Miles Calculator to check whether the redemption still makes sense after fees, or explore other options through Award Travel Finder to compare availability across programs.

🏨 Alaska Lounge Returns to Priority Pass at SFO - With a $15 Cover Charge
The Alaska Lounge at San Francisco International has rejoined the Priority Pass network after a period away - but it comes with a mandatory $15 co-pay per visit. That's on top of whatever you're paying through your credit card's Priority Pass membership.
The timing is worth paying attention to. Alaska has been pulling back flights at SFO, which means the lounge has extra capacity. That spare space is now being monetized through Priority Pass access at a price point rather than free entry.
If you're transiting through SFO and have Priority Pass, you can now get in - just be ready to pay the $15 fee at the door. Not the most compelling proposition if you're used to free lounge access, but better than no option at all. You can check current lounge access options at any airport using Airport Lounge List, and plan your SFO arrival time with FlightQueue SFO to see estimated security wait times.
💳 Amex Changes Referral Limits - From Points Cap to 5 Per Year
American Express quietly updated its referral bonus terms as of April 8th, 2026. The old system capped how many points you could earn annually from referrals. The new system sets a flat limit of five referrals per card, per year - regardless of how many points each referral generates.
Whether this is better or worse for you depends on your situation. If you were making lots of low-point referrals, the five-per-card cap could be more limiting. If you were hitting a points ceiling before, the new structure might actually give you more flexibility on high-value cards.
The new terms apply per card, which means if you hold multiple Amex cards, each one gets its own five-referral allowance. Worth keeping in mind if you're planning to refer friends or family to Amex products this year. You can check which Amex welcome bonuses you're still eligible for using our Amex eligibility checker.
✈️ Copa Airlines Goes Free Starlink - A Big Upgrade for Latin America
Copa Airlines is rolling out free Starlink Wi-Fi across its fleet - a genuinely significant move for an airline that previously had essentially no inflight connectivity. Copa operates an all-Boeing 737 fleet out of Panama City, connecting Latin America efficiently, and has always been known more for reliability and fares than premium amenities.
Free Starlink changes the calculus considerably. If you travel frequently through Latin America and have been avoiding Copa due to the connectivity gap, that barrier is now gone. Before your next flight, you can verify whether Starlink is live on your specific aircraft at SeatWifi.com, which tracks in-flight Wi-Fi availability and quality by route.
Not every flight needs to be an award booking either - if you're hunting for cheap cash fares on Copa or elsewhere in the region, Friday Flight Deals tracks the best cash prices every week.
🌎 Trivia Reveal
The answer is IHG One Rewards - specifically the Chase IHG One Rewards Premier Business card, which just brought back its best-ever 200,000-point welcome bonus at a $99 annual fee.
