Something quietly unraveling at 35,000 feet - and it started on the ground at Heathrow.
American Airlines has a catering mess in London right now, and the solution they landed on is... flying meals over from the US. Yes, really. Two flights worth of food get loaded stateside, flown across the Atlantic, and then that same stock is used for the return trip. The result is bare-minimum service, limited entree choices, and - perhaps most painfully for business class passengers - no ice cream up front. There simply isn't enough galley space to carry full catering both ways.
It's a genuinely strange situation, and one that illustrates just how much can go wrong behind the scenes. For anyone booked in Flagship Business on a London route right now, it's worth tempering expectations on the dining front.
And while we're on the subject of American service issues - a former Vogue editor recently went viral for downgrading herself from first class to business class on a transatlantic American flight, citing bad service. It's one thing to read about service complaints. It's another when someone literally walks away from a seat they paid for. Not a great look for a carrier already fighting perception battles.

🎧 United's New Rule: Put On Headphones or Get Off the Plane
This one's genuinely good news, and I'll be surprised if it generates much pushback from readers.
United Airlines has updated its contract of carriage to require passengers to use headphones when playing audio or video on personal devices. The key part? Non-compliance is listed as grounds for removal from the flight.
Now, enforcement is always the question with these kinds of policies - but the fact that it's written into the contract of carriage gives crew actual teeth when dealing with passengers blasting videos at full volume in a packed cabin. If you've ever sat next to someone watching TikToks on speaker for three hours, you know exactly why this matters.
It's a small but meaningful shift toward protecting the in-flight experience for everyone. United deserves credit for formalizing this.

🛫 Southwest's Boarding Chaos Is Getting Worse - And Crew Are Paying the Price
Southwest Airlines switched to assigned seating on January 27th, and the transition has been anything but smooth. The flight attendants' union is now publicly blasting the airline for a new boarding approach that, in their words, puts all the cost and burden on crew.
The union's frustration is understandable. A seating system overhaul of this scale requires operational infrastructure - clear processes, trained gate agents, and consistent enforcement. When that support isn't there, it falls on flight attendants to manage confused passengers, disputed assignments, and boarding delays on the fly.
There's also an interesting side effect worth noting: since Southwest moved away from open seating, wheelchair assistance requests have plummeted almost overnight. It had long been suspected that some passengers were gaming the pre-boarding system to get better seats under the old free-for-all format. Assigned seating removed that incentive entirely.
Whether Southwest irons out the boarding wrinkles quickly will go a long way in determining whether this rebrand sticks. Right now it's a work in progress - and crew are feeling it most.

💰 Buy Lufthansa Miles With a 50% Bonus - Is It Worth It?
Lufthansa's Miles & More program is running a promotion right now: buy miles and receive a 50% bonus, bringing the effective cost to roughly 1.42 cents per mile.
Here's the honest take: this is niche, but it can be genuinely worthwhile. Miles & More is a currency that can be hard to accumulate in large quantities outside of flying Lufthansa or its Star Alliance partners - there aren't many easy credit card pathways to rack these up in the US market.
The important caveat is that Miles & More switched to dynamic award pricing in 2025. That means some of the classic fixed-rate sweet spots are gone, and in general the changes weren't favorable for award seekers. So before you buy, make sure you have a specific redemption in mind. Buying speculatively into a dynamic-priced program is a recipe for disappointment.
Before buying Lufthansa Miles & More miles, confirm the exact award cost for your specific route and dates - dynamic pricing means the math changes constantly.
That said, if you have a redemption already scouted and the numbers work at 1.42 cents per mile, this is one of the better buy-miles windows Miles & More has offered.

🚨 Deal Alert: Chase's 20% Avios Transfer Bonus Is Still Live
If you missed yesterday's newsletter - the 20% transfer bonus from Chase Ultimate Rewards to Avios programs (British Airways, Aer Lingus, and Iberia) launched recently and is still active. This is relevant for anyone sitting on Chase points who has been eyeing a British Airways or Iberia redemption.
The bonus applies when transferring to any of those three Avios programs, and crucially - once you have Avios, you can move them onward to Qatar Airways or Finnair, opening up a wider range of redemption options. It's not the biggest bonus we've ever seen to Avios, but it's a meaningful boost for anyone with a trip already planned.

💡 Capital One's 30% Bonus to Preferred Hotels - Worth the Math Check
Capital One is also running a transfer bonus right now - 30% when you transfer Capital One miles to Preferred Hotels & Resorts I Prefer. The adjusted ratio becomes 1:2.6.
To be straightforward with you: even with the bonus, this isn't as strong as the regular 1:4 ratio you get transferring Citi ThankYou points to the same program. So if you hold Citi points, that remains the better pathway into Preferred Hotels. But if Capital One miles are what you have, and you've been looking for a reason to pull the trigger on a Preferred Hotels stay, the 30% boost makes it meaningfully less painful.
The bonus runs through late March, so there's no immediate fire drill - but don't set it and forget it either. Check the exact expiry date before you plan around it.

🛒 Free Money at Staples This Week
Quick note for manufactured spending and gift card enthusiasts: Staples is running its fee-free $200 Mastercard gift card promotion through Saturday, March 7th. The limit is nine per customer per day listed, though some stores may be flexible on that.
This is an in-store-only deal, so it takes a bit of legwork - but for anyone who knows how to put fee-free gift cards to work, this is a recurring Staples promo worth keeping on your radar every time it comes around. Saturday March 7th is your cutoff.
And while on the topic of cash flight deals - if you'd rather skip the points math entirely for your next trip, our weekly
🌎 Trivia Reveal
The answer to today's trivia question: Lufthansa's Miles & More switched to dynamic award pricing in 2025.
That's option B - dynamic award pricing. The shift means award costs are no longer fixed by zone or distance, but instead fluctuate based on demand and availability, much like cash fares. For most frequent redemers, the change has been a net negative. Some new sweet spots have emerged, but the predictability and classic fixed-rate value are largely gone. It's one more reason to do your research before buying Miles & More miles speculatively.

The American Airlines story today about the Vogue editor walking out of first class really got me thinking about how much cabin experience actually matters versus the seat itself. Curious whether any of you have been in that position.
