  • 💳 Credit Card News: Citi launches the new Strata Elite card with 75,000 points plus up to $1,200 in travel credits in year one

  • ✈️ Airline News: American Airlines closed airport customer service counters but left the signage up - stranding passengers at DCA

  • 🚨 Deal Alert: Chase to Avios transfer bonus at 20% ends March 31 - great timing for BA, Iberia, and Aer Lingus redemptions

A passenger walks up to the American Airlines service counter at Washington National. Their flight just got canceled. The counter is right there - the sign, the desk, the whole setup. They queue up. Nobody comes. Nobody ever comes. Because American closed the counter weeks ago and just... left the sign up.

That story perfectly captures the gap between what airlines say and what passengers experience. And it's not the only example in today's newsletter - there's a lot going on. Let's get into it.

🤓 Miles & Points Trivia

Which Gulf carrier just announced it will operate double-daily flights to Chicago, making it the airline's largest US market?

  • 🇶🇦 Qatar Airways

  • 🇦🇪 Emirates

  • 🇦🇪 Etihad Airways

  • 🇸🇦 Saudia

The answer is near the bottom of today's newsletter... keep scrolling. 👇

✈️ American's Ghost Counters at Washington National

Here's a customer service failure that feels almost theatrical. American Airlines has been quietly closing its airport service counters as part of a broader cost-cutting push to move everything to the app and phone lines. That's a real trend across the industry - and debatable on its own merits.

But at Washington National, someone forgot to take down the counter. Or just didn't bother. So when American flights got canceled, stranded passengers did exactly what you'd expect - they walked to the clearly-labeled customer service desk and lined up. For no one.

The roundup that surfaced this story also includes a Delta passenger whose $9,000 watch went missing, and Finnair blowing up a Hawaii award sweet spot that had been quietly productive for points travelers. The Finnair change is worth noting if you've been banking on that route - that window may now be closed.

The broader lesson here: if you ever find yourself stranded due to a cancellation, don't queue at an unstaffed counter. The airline's app, the phone line (especially the elite line if you have status), and Twitter/X DMs tend to move faster than any in-person queue anyway. 💳 Citi's New Card Might Be the Sleeper Hit of 2026

Citi just launched the Strata Elite card, and the first-year value proposition is genuinely hard to ignore. You're looking at 75,000 ThankYou Points after hitting the spend threshold, plus up to $1,200 in travel credits in year one. That combination is a strong opening offer.

But here's what makes this card particularly interesting right now: ThankYou Points now transfer directly to American Airlines AAdvantage. That's a big deal for anyone who's been holding Citi points and wondering where to send them. Combined with American's miles currently available to buy at a 40% discount through April 14 at 2.26 cents each, the ecosystem around AAdvantage is looking unusually accessible at the moment.

The $1,200 in credits is what makes year one compelling even for skeptics. If you can actually use those credits - and they're travel credits so most people can - the effective cost of the card in year one drops dramatically. Whether the card holds up in year two is a different conversation, but as a sign-up proposition, this is one of the stronger launches we've seen from Citi in a while.

You can see all our Citi coverage and card analysis on our Citi Strata Elite tag page.

75,000 ThankYou Points plus up to $1,200 in travel credits in year one - the Citi Strata Elite is making a strong first impression.

✈️ Etihad Is Betting Big on Chicago

Etihad has been flying Abu Dhabi to Chicago since 2009, but it's always been a single daily service - solid but unremarkable. That's about to change. Etihad is going double-daily on the route, which will make Chicago its largest US market. That's a significant strategic statement.

For points travelers, more flights generally means more award availability. If you've been trying to use Etihad Guest miles on this route - or transfer points to Etihad for a long-haul redemption - the expanded schedule could open up seats that previously weren't there. Use our Etihad Award Seat Finder to check availability once the new schedule goes live.

Worth noting: Etihad is currently selling miles at a 35% discount through April 14 at 2.08 cents each if you want to top up your balance before searching for award space. Not the best buy-miles deal on the market right now, but reasonable for a premium program if you have a specific redemption in mind.

One caveat worth flagging from the source: Gulf carrier operations are currently under pressure due to regional instability from Iranian attacks on the region. Etihad is making long-term plans here, but it's worth keeping an eye on how conditions evolve before locking in non-refundable bookings to or through Abu Dhabi. For more on Etihad Guest and award travel, we have ongoing coverage on our tag page.

🚨 Deal Alert: Court Bailiff Seizes a Ryanair 737 Over $1,182

This one isn't a points deal - it's a consumer rights story that's too good not to share. An Austrian court bailiff actually walked onto a Ryanair Boeing 737 at Linz Airport and seized the aircraft because Ryanair had refused to pay a delayed passenger $1,182 she was legally owed under EU compensation rules.

Ryanair spent months ignoring the compensation order. The bailiff's appearance turned a routine turnaround into a very public embarrassment. Ryanair eventually paid - because they had to, not because they wanted to.

The practical takeaway for anyone flying in Europe: EU261 passenger compensation rules have real teeth when you pursue them properly. Airlines like Ryanair routinely ignore initial claims hoping passengers will give up. If you're owed compensation for a delayed or canceled EU flight and the airline isn't responding, escalating to your national enforcement body (or using a claims service that works on a no-win-no-fee basis) is worth the effort. This Austrian passenger just proved the system works - it just takes persistence.

✈️ Spirit Airlines Thinks It Can Pull Off Chapter 11... Again

Spirit Airlines is signaling that it expects to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy soon. This is the airline's second trip through Chapter 11 in under a year, which tells you something about the structural challenges facing ultra-low-cost carriers right now.

The honest assessment: Spirit has been burning through cash at an alarming rate and has come close to liquidation multiple times. An emergence from bankruptcy doesn't mean the business model is fixed - it means creditors agreed to restructured terms. Whether Spirit can actually compete in a market where every major airline now has a basic economy product is a genuinely open question.

For points travelers, Spirit's Free Spirit program has some niche utility, but it's not a program worth building a strategy around given the airline's instability. If you happen to have Free Spirit miles sitting there, now might be a reasonable time to use them rather than accumulate more.

⏰ Last Chance: Southwest Companion Pass Offer Ends This Week

If you've been considering the Southwest personal cards, this is your final window. The current welcome offer - which includes a Companion Pass plus bonus points when you hit the minimum spend - is expiring this week. A Companion Pass lets a designated companion fly with you for just taxes and fees on every Southwest flight you take for the remainder of the year and all of next year.

That's genuinely one of the most valuable perks in domestic travel loyalty. If you're a regular Southwest flyer and haven't pulled the trigger yet, the math becomes very straightforward: the Companion Pass alone is worth hundreds to thousands of dollars depending on how often you fly together.

Also ending this week: a status match opportunity with Royal Jordanian that connects to Oneworld status. If you're chasing elite status in the Oneworld alliance, this is worth investigating before it closes. You can see all our Southwest Companion Pass coverage for more context on how to maximize this offer.

🚨 Deal Alert: Chase Avios Transfer Bonus - 15 Days Left

Three Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer bonuses are running simultaneously right now - and they all end March 31. You're getting a 20% bonus when transferring Chase points to British Airways Avios, Iberia Avios, or Aer Lingus Avios. That means every 10,000 Chase points becomes 12,000 Avios.

Avios have some genuinely excellent sweet spots that are easy to miss if you haven't explored them. Short-haul flights within the US on American Airlines can be booked with British Airways Avios at surprisingly low rates. Iberia Avios have been the go-to for cheap business class to Madrid and beyond. And Aer Lingus Avios can get you to Dublin in business class for rates that would make you stop and re-read the booking confirmation.

If you're sitting on a healthy Chase balance and any of these programs align with your travel plans, the 20% bonus makes transfers meaningfully more valuable right now. Use our British Airways Reward Avios Flight Finder to check what's available before you commit to a transfer.

20% Chase to Avios transfer bonus ends March 31 - covers British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus. That's 12,000 Avios for every 10,000 Chase points.

There's also a 30% Chase to Wyndham bonus running through the same date if hotel points are more useful to you right now. And if you want to see everything currently on the table, our transfer bonuses tracker has the full rundown.

💰 Current Offers & Bonuses

A few other things worth knowing about right now:

The Marriott Bonvoy Bevy American Express card is running a 175,000-point limited-time welcome offer. That's a record for this card. The Bevy is a mid-tier card with a $250 annual fee, and while the ongoing perks are fairly ordinary, 175,000 Marriott points is a serious amount of hotel currency. Check whether you're eligible before applying - the Amex once-per-lifetime rules apply here.

On the buy-points side, Avianca LifeMiles has a 160% bonus through March 22 at 1.27 cents each - one of the best values on the market right now if you have Star Alliance redemptions in mind. Air Canada Aeroplan is also offering a 90% bonus through March 19. Both of these windows are closing fast. Our buy points promotions page has everything in one place.

Also: Award Travel Finder has been tracking some sharp Business Class availability to the Middle East and Asia this week - worth checking if you have transferable points burning a hole in your account.

And if you're more interested in cheap cash fares than award redemptions right now, Friday Flight Deals had some eye-catching transatlantic fares in last week's edition - well worth a subscribe if cash travel is part of your mix.

🌎 Trivia Reveal

The answer is Etihad Airways! The Abu Dhabi-based carrier is going double-daily on its Chicago O'Hare route, which will make the Windy City its largest US market. More flights means more award availability - keep an eye on this one if you're targeting business class to the Gulf or beyond.
