250,000 points. No typo, no catch buried in the fine print.
American Express just turned up the volume on its Business Platinum card with one of the largest welcome bonuses the product has ever carried. That number alone shifts the math for a lot of business owners who have been on the fence. But that's not even the most interesting story today.
We've also got a lounge leak from Charlotte, a Southwest seating situation that has passengers frustrated, and a United runway incident at LAX that is genuinely hard to read without your jaw dropping a little. Let's get into it.
🤓 Miles & Points Trivia
Here's a quick one before we dive in:
What is the minimum spend required to earn the new 200,000-point welcome bonus on the Amex Business Platinum?
💰 $10,000
💰 $15,000
💰 $20,000
💰 $25,000
The answer is waiting for you near the bottom of today's newsletter. Keep scrolling. 👇
💳 Amex Just Swung for the Fences on Business Platinum
American Express is clearly on a mission to capture premium business cardholders right now, and the latest move is hard to ignore. The Business Platinum Card is currently offering 250,000 Membership Rewards points after $20,000 in spending - a figure that represents one of the highest bonuses we have seen on this card in recent memory.

What 250K Membership Rewards Actually Gets You
To put that in perspective, 250,000 Amex points could get you into business class across the Atlantic multiple times when transferred to the right partner. Pair that with Centurion Lounge access and hundreds of dollars in annual travel credits, and the card's $695 annual fee starts to look a lot more manageable.
The key here is the transfer angle. Amex Membership Rewards moves to a long list of airline and hotel partners, and right now there is even a 15% transfer bonus to Avianca LifeMiles running through March 28th - which can unlock some seriously underpriced award space on Star Alliance carriers. You can find all live transfer bonuses at milesandpointsdaily.com/transfer-bonuses.
If you have been sitting on the fence about the Business Platinum, this is one of the better windows in a while. Check your eligibility before applying.
🏨 Charlotte Is Getting a Sidecar Lounge - And It Leaked
American Express has not made an official announcement yet, but a city lease packet tells the story: the next Sidecar by Centurion Lounge is heading to Charlotte Douglas International Airport, with the lease agreement up for approval today, March 9th.
Bigger Than Las Vegas, Different From a Traditional Centurion
The Las Vegas Sidecar that launched recently is a compact, restaurant-style space where guests order food and drinks via QR code and must have a flight departing within 90 minutes. The Charlotte buildout is reportedly larger, which could signal a slightly different format - though the core Sidecar concept appears to be staying intact.
For Amex Platinum and Business Platinum cardholders based in Charlotte or connecting through CLT frequently, this is welcome news. The traditional Centurion Lounge network has faced overcrowding complaints for years, and the Sidecar concept seems designed to offer a differentiated, lower-friction experience for quick layovers. More details will follow once the lease is formally approved.

✈️ United's LAX Runway Incident Is Uncomfortable Reading
Here is the sequence of events at Los Angeles International Airport a few days ago, and it is worth reading carefully. A United Airlines Airbus A321neo was cleared to take off on a runway. A Boeing 787-9 - also operated by United - had just landed and was taxiing. Air traffic control asked the 787 crew whether they would hold short of the active runway. The pilots confirmed they would. Then they did not.
The Confirmation That Was Not Followed
The 787 entered the occupied runway while the A321neo was in its takeoff roll. Disaster was avoided - the A321neo crew aborted the takeoff in time - but this is precisely the kind of incident that investigators look at hard, particularly given the heightened scrutiny on runway incursions at U.S. airports in recent years.
The 787 crew's verbal confirmation that they would hold short makes this incident particularly difficult to explain away as a simple misunderstanding. No injuries were reported, and passengers on the A321neo were delayed but eventually reached their destination. The FAA has been notified.

🚨 Deal Alert: IHG 15% Award Discount - Book by Tomorrow
This one has a hard deadline: Chase IHG credit cardholders are being offered a 15% discount on award stays for travel between March 7th and April 20th, but the booking window closes tomorrow, March 9th.
This is targeted, and it does not stack with the fourth-night-free benefit - but it does apply to Points and Cash redemptions. If you have IHG One Rewards points sitting in your account and a trip already in mind, it is worth logging in right now to check whether the discount is showing up on your account.

✈️ Southwest's Paid Seat Problem Is Getting Awkward
Southwest Airlines has been rolling out assigned seating - a significant shift for a carrier that built its entire brand around open boarding. But there is now a growing frustration among passengers who paid for premium seats and still cannot move to an empty row when the plane boards with plenty of open space.
Paying More, Getting Less Flexibility
Even passengers who paid for emergency-row or premium seats are being told they cannot relocate to an empty row during boarding. For a product that customers are now paying extra for, the rigidity is rubbing people the wrong way - particularly when other carriers with assigned seating do allow passengers to move to empty seats once the door closes.
Southwest is clearly still working out the kinks of a seating model it has never operated before. The transition was always going to be bumpy, but getting the policy right on empty seat flexibility seems like a relatively straightforward fix.
If you want to keep up with all the changes happening at Southwest right now, our Southwest Airlines coverage has everything in one place.
🏨 Marriott's St. Croix Resort Might Finally Be Done
The Carambola Beach Resort in St. Croix - long considered one of Marriott's most embarrassing properties after losing its Renaissance flag and earning a reputation for poor conditions - may be headed for a major overhaul. A government-backed redevelopment plan worth roughly $50 million is making its way through the U.S. Virgin Islands legislature.
The deal is not finalized yet, and the hotel remains bookable in the meantime - though you would be wise to avoid it based on the existing reviews. If the redevelopment goes through, the site could eventually be transformed into something worth returning to. Worth watching if you have St. Croix on your radar for future Marriott Bonvoy redemptions.

🌎 Trivia Reveal
The answer is C - $20,000. The new Amex Business Platinum welcome bonus of 200,000 Membership Rewards points requires $20,000 in spending to unlock. At typical Membership Rewards valuations, that bonus alone can be worth well over $3,000 when transferred to premium airline partners at peak rates.
200,000 Membership Rewards points after $20,000 in spend. That's the number on the Amex Business Platinum right now - and it's one of the biggest we've seen on that card.
