The airline's own founder. On a leaked recording. Saying it could go bankrupt this year.
That's the kind of sentence that stops you mid-scroll. And yet here we are. JetBlue is in a genuinely precarious position right now, and the news today goes well beyond one struggling carrier. United is quietly reshaping who gets access to its best lounges, Rakuten just flipped on a promotion that could stack serious points on top of your credit card spending, and a brand-new Hyatt property just opened in one of Europe's most beautiful cities. Let's get into it.
🤓 Miles & Points Trivia
Quick question before we dive in:
The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey card just added a new transfer partner. What's the transfer ratio to Wyndham?
🔵 1:1 (one Wells Fargo point to one Wyndham point)
🟡 1:2 (one Wells Fargo point to two Wyndham points)
🔴 2:1 (two Wells Fargo points to one Wyndham point)
🟢 1:4 (one Wells Fargo point to four Wyndham points)
The answer is waiting for you near the bottom of today's newsletter - keep scrolling. 👇
✈️ JetBlue's Founder Just Said the Quiet Part Out Loud
A leaked recording has surfaced of JetBlue founder David Neeleman warning that the airline could be pushed into bankruptcy this year if fuel prices stay elevated. What makes this more striking than the typical analyst hand-wringing is that Neeleman built JetBlue from scratch and still cares deeply about what happens to it. He also said, bluntly, that he doesn't believe any major U.S. carrier wants to take on JetBlue's debt load - making an acquisition far less likely than some have hoped.
Spirit's Shadow Looming Large
This lands alongside a Bloomberg report suggesting Spirit Airlines could liquidate within days. Spirit is already in its second Chapter 11 filing after its first restructuring collapsed, and the U.S. bankruptcy trustee has been openly skeptical of the airline's latest plan. Two ultra-low-cost carriers in serious trouble at the same time is a meaningful signal about where the budget end of the market is heading.
If you're sitting on JetBlue TrueBlue points right now, it's worth thinking about your exposure. JetBlue does have partners - Aeromexico, Emirates, and others - but the redemption ecosystem is limited compared to a full frequent flyer program. The best move is probably to use what you have rather than keep accumulating. Check the current value of your TrueBlue balance with our JetBlue Points Calculator and see what award options are available to you now.
For all our ongoing JetBlue coverage, we'll keep tracking this as it develops.
🚪 United Just Quietly Closed the Polaris Lounge to Most Star Alliance Partners
This one flew under the radar mid-week, but it's a big deal if you fly Star Alliance business class on any carrier other than United. United has sharply restricted Polaris Lounge access, cutting out most Star Alliance partner airline passengers - even those flying in paid business class on carriers like Lufthansa, ANA, or Singapore Airlines connecting through a United hub.
Who Still Gets In - And Who Doesn't
United is keeping access for its own premium customers plus a narrow group of joint venture partners. Everyone else in Star Alliance business class is now redirected to United Clubs instead - which are decidedly less premium. The timing makes some sense given United's push to add more Polaris seats and open transcon Polaris access, but for travelers who specifically routed connections through United hubs to use those lounges, this changes the calculus entirely.
If your business class itinerary connects through Chicago O'Hare or Newark and you're not flying United metal, don't count on that Polaris Lounge access anymore.
This is part of a broader trend of airlines tightening lounge access as premium cabins grow. Check out all our lounge access coverage for the full picture. And for all our United coverage, head to our United stories.
🚨 Deal Alert: Up to 100x Points Per Dollar Through Rakuten
This is the kind of promotion that makes you think twice before buying anything directly from a retailer. Rakuten is running a promotion offering up to 100x Amex Membership Rewards or Bilt points per dollar spent at select stores - and if you have an Amex card that earns Membership Rewards, or a Bilt card, this stacks directly on top of whatever you'd already earn from the card itself.
To be clear: 100x is the ceiling, and not every retailer hits that number. But even at 20x or 30x on a purchase you were already planning to make, this is a meaningful acceleration. If you haven't connected your Rakuten account to Amex or Bilt yet, now is the time to do it before this window closes.
Not everything needs to be an award booking, of course - but for everyday shopping that happens to earn points at this rate, it's hard to argue against using the portal. Friday Flight Deals also tracks cash deals if you're in the market for flights that are better paid than redeemed.
🏨 A New Hyatt Just Opened in One of Europe's Best Cities
The Andaz Lisbon opened this week in the city's Baixa neighborhood, right on Praça do Comércio - which is arguably one of the most photogenic squares in all of Europe. The property has 170 rooms and suites and is now live for World of Hyatt bookings.
Why Lisbon Is a Smart Hyatt Redemption Target
Lisbon has been one of the hottest travel destinations in Europe for a few years running, and cash rates in the city have climbed significantly. A brand-new Andaz property in a prime location is likely to price high in cash terms, which makes award nights particularly appealing relative to the points cost. If you have Chase Ultimate Rewards, there's also a 20% transfer bonus to Air Canada Aeroplan running through April 30 - though Hyatt transfers directly from Chase at 1:1 with no fees. Use our Hyatt Points Calculator to figure out whether an award night or cash booking makes more sense for your dates.
Award Travel Finder has been tracking European Hyatt availability - well worth checking if you're planning a Lisbon trip in the next few months.
💳 Wells Fargo Just Made a $95 Card More Useful
The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey - a card that doesn't get nearly enough attention for its price point - just added Wyndham as a transfer partner at a 1:2 ratio. That means one Wells Fargo point becomes two Wyndham Rewards points, which is a genuinely interesting conversion given how far Wyndham points can stretch across their property portfolio.
For context: Wyndham has one of the largest hotel footprints in the world, including properties at popular destinations where premium brands don't operate. Being able to funnel points from a flexible transferable currency into Wyndham at a 2-for-1 rate meaningfully expands what the Autograph Journey can do. This is part of a broader pattern we've been watching of mid-tier cards quietly improving their transfer partner lineups to compete with the premium players.
✈️ American Turns 100 - And Starts Acting Like It Cares About Passengers Again
American Airlines celebrated its 100th birthday yesterday, and while centennials are usually just an excuse for press releases, there's something worth noting underneath the nostalgia. American has been making visible moves recently - new lounges, premium seat investments, and even small touches like pilot trading cards being handed out to passengers on mainline flights.
Also worth noting: the completed rollout of Lavazza coffee across all American flights and lounges. It sounds minor, but onboard coffee quality is one of those things that frequent flyers notice immediately - and for a carrier that's had a rough few years on the product side, it's a signal that someone is paying attention to details again. Whether this early momentum holds is the real story to watch.

⏰ Transfer Bonuses Expiring Very Soon
Two Citi ThankYou transfer bonuses are expiring tomorrow, April 18 - and they're worth acting on if you've been sitting on Citi points.
Citi ThankYou to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club: +30% bonus, ending April 18. Citi ThankYou to Avianca LifeMiles: +25% bonus, also ending April 18. Both expire tomorrow.
The Virgin Atlantic bonus is particularly interesting right now. Flying Club is one of the better programs for booking Delta partner awards - something that comes up a lot when travelers are looking for better value on transcon or Caribbean redemptions. 🌎 Trivia Reveal
The answer is B - 1:2. The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey transfers to Wyndham at a 1:2 ratio, meaning every Wells Fargo point you transfer becomes two Wyndham Rewards points. At that ratio, it's one of the more generous hotel transfer rates on a card with a $95 annual fee.
