  • ✈️ Airline News: United CEO Scott Kirby has reportedly pitched buying American Airlines to Trump administration officials

  • 💳 Transfer Bonus Alert: Citi ThankYou points to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club earn a 30% bonus - but only until April 18

  • 🚨 Devaluation Warning: Citi ThankYou transfer rates to Choice Privileges and I Prefer Hotels drop on April 19 - transfer now if you have them

  • 🏨 Hotel News: A new Hyatt resort inspired by Greek mythology is opening this summer on the island of Paros

Picture this: you get fired from your job. You go work for a competitor, build it into a powerhouse, then walk into Washington and pitch buying the company that let you go. That's not a movie plot - that's apparently what United CEO Scott Kirby is doing right now.

There's a lot to unpack today - plus a hard deadline you absolutely cannot miss if you have Citi ThankYou points sitting around. Let's get into it.

🤓 Miles & Points Trivia

Which hotel transfer partner is Citi ThankYou slashing by a full 50% starting April 19?

  • 🏨 Marriott Bonvoy

  • 🏨 I Prefer Hotel Rewards (Preferred Hotels & Resorts)

  • 🏨 World of Hyatt

  • 🏨 Hilton Honors

The answer is waiting near the bottom of today's newsletter... keep scrolling. 👇

✈️ Scott Kirby Wants to Buy the Airline That Fired Him

This story reads like it was written for a business school case study. Scott Kirby was fired as American Airlines' president back in 2016. He landed at United, turned around one of the most troubled carriers in the US, and now - according to Bloomberg - has pitched the idea of United acquiring American to senior members of the Trump administration.

Why the Trump Administration Is the Key Audience Here

Kirby didn't take this to the Department of Justice or to American's board first - he reportedly went straight to Trump officials. That's a calculated move. This administration has shown it likes big, splashy deals, and a US airline mega-merger would certainly qualify. Whether this goes anywhere is another question entirely.

For points and miles folks, the implications are enormous. A combined United-American would create a loyalty program behemoth - think MileagePlus absorbing AAdvantage, or the reverse. Partner agreements, transfer relationships, and redemption rates across Star Alliance and oneworld would all be in play. Nothing is imminent, but this is worth watching closely.

🚨 Citi's Hotel Transfer Devaluation Hits This Saturday - Act Before April 19

This is the most time-sensitive item in today's newsletter. Citi ThankYou Rewards is cutting the value of transfers to two hotel programs starting April 19 - that's this Saturday - and one of those cuts is absolutely brutal.

50% Cut to I Prefer, 25% Cut to Choice

Transfers to I Prefer Hotel Rewards - the loyalty program for Preferred Hotels & Resorts - are getting slashed by 50%. That means the same number of ThankYou points will get you half the hotel points starting Saturday. Transfers to Choice Privileges are taking a 25% hit. If you have ThankYou points and any interest in either of these programs, transfer them before April 19.

But here's where it gets more interesting. There's also a 25% transfer bonus from Citi ThankYou to Avianca LifeMiles running until April 18, and a 30% bonus to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club also ending April 18. So if you were planning to move ThankYou points anywhere this month, this weekend is genuinely crunch time.

The Citi ThankYou transfer bonus to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club - 30% extra miles - ends April 18. If you're moving points this week, prioritize this one.

Not sure how much your ThankYou points are worth before you transfer? Run the numbers with our Points & Miles Value Calculator first.

✈️ Delta's New Business Class Suites Are Finally Official

Delta has been teasing its next-generation cabin product for a while, and yesterday it made everything official. The new Delta One suites are coming to the Airbus A350-1000, with longer beds, more privacy, and fully enclosed suite doors. Think of it as Delta's answer to what Qatar Airways and Singapore Airlines have been doing for years.

The Retrofit Plan for the A330 Fleet

Here's what's arguably more exciting for near-term travelers: Delta is also retrofitting its entire A330-200 and A330-300 fleet with updated business class suites. These are different from the A350 product but still a significant step up from what's on those planes today. If you've been holding off booking Delta long-haul business class, it's worth checking which aircraft is operating your route.

Speaking of surprising things - Delta is also putting real effort into economy on these planes. More cushioning, larger screens, USB-C power, and Bluetooth audio. The back of the plane has been an afterthought for too long at US carriers, so this is a welcome change.

If you're planning a Delta redemption, use our Delta SkyMiles Calculator to figure out what your miles are worth before you book. For all our Delta coverage, we track every route and cabin update.

✈️ Air Canada Pulls Back the Curtain on Brand New Cabins

While Delta is getting most of the attention, Air Canada quietly dropped some genuinely impressive cabin news of its own. The airline has revealed new interiors for both its Boeing 787-10 and Airbus A321XLR - and from what Air Canada's COO has shared about the design philosophy, there are some deliberate choices worth knowing about before you book.

The 787-10 Business Class and What the COO Actually Said

Air Canada obsessed over specific design details - seating angles, door certification timelines, and how these cabins slot into a broader fleet renewal plan. The A321XLR cabin news is particularly notable given how many transatlantic routes that aircraft is expected to serve. More narrow-body lie-flat options to Europe is a genuinely big deal for points redemptions.

This connects nicely to the Chase Ultimate Rewards to Air Canada Aeroplan transfer bonus running right now - 20% extra Aeroplan points through April 30. If you've been thinking about a Canadian carrier redemption, now is the time to move those Chase points. Check out all our Air Canada coverage for more.

⚠️ Amex Platinum Is Losing Lufthansa Lounge Access in October

Mark your calendar for October 1, 2026. That's when the Amex Platinum card will stop offering access to Lufthansa Business Lounges and Senator Lounges in Frankfurt and Munich. Right now, Amex Platinum cardholders traveling on Lufthansa in economy can access the Business Lounge, and business class travelers can access the Senator Lounge. Both benefits are disappearing.

What Frankfurt and Munich Travelers Need to Know Now

If you have Frankfurt or Munich trips planned later this year, factor this in. After October 1st, you'll need a Priority Pass or Centurion Lounge access to get into a decent lounge at those airports - or be flying in Lufthansa business class with its own lounge access.

This is part of a pattern of Amex trimming benefits on the Platinum card. The card is still packed with value if you use it right - see our full breakdown of whether the Amex Platinum is worth it.

🏨 A New Hyatt Just Got Announced on a Greek Island

If your summer travel plans are still taking shape, here's one worth bookmarking. A new Destination by Hyatt property called the Parian Chronicle is opening this summer on the Greek island of Paros. The hotel takes its design cues from the ancient Parian Chronicle marble inscription, and it's situated in Kampos - a short drive from Paros Airport.

Paros has been one of the most sought-after Greek islands for travelers who've already done Santorini and Mykonos. A Hyatt property there means World of Hyatt points redemptions, which tend to be excellent value in Europe. Award Travel Finder is worth checking for Hyatt award availability as the summer approaches - they track availability daily across all Hyatt properties.

Use our Hyatt Points Calculator to see what your points are worth before you book. For more on Hyatt hotels, we cover every promotion and update.
