There's a pattern emerging across airlines and hotels right now that I think is worth calling out directly: loyalty programs and travel companies are quietly shifting risk and cost onto customers while making it harder to push back. Today's newsletter has three stories that illustrate this perfectly - from opposite ends of the market.
Let's get into it.
🤓 Miles & Points Trivia
Citi ThankYou points just launched a transfer bonus to a hotel program. But how many Citi ThankYou points does it normally take to get 200 Leading Hotels of the World (LHW) points - before any bonus?
🏨 500 Citi ThankYou points
🏨 750 Citi ThankYou points
🏨 1,000 Citi ThankYou points
🏨 1,500 Citi ThankYou points
The answer is waiting near the bottom of today's newsletter... keep scrolling. 👇
✈️ Air France Cancelled a Valid Ticket - Then Asked for $1,800 More
This one is genuinely infuriating, and it deserves more attention than it's getting.
A customer booked and paid for a last-minute business class ticket with Air France. The airline cancelled it after charging his card, then told him he had 24 hours to call if he wanted to keep his travel plans intact. He called within hours - doing exactly what the airline instructed - and was told the only way to fly was to purchase the same itinerary again for $1,800 more.
Air France's Response: "We Won't Fix It"
The strangest part? Air France doesn't dispute what happened. They simply refuse to do anything about it. The airline's position is that the original fare was no longer available when the ticket was reissued, so the price difference is the customer's problem - even though the cancellation was entirely the airline's fault.
This is a reminder that airline customer service can fail at the highest fare classes, not just budget cabins. If you're booking last-minute business class on Air France, document everything and pay with a card that offers strong purchase protection. Amex Platinum cardholders, in particular, have robust travel protections worth leaning on in situations like this.

🏨 The Ritz-Carlton Doha Guest Who Got Deported for Complaining
If you ever needed a reason to think carefully about where you stay and how you raise complaints internationally, this story is it.
A couple staying at the Ritz-Carlton Doha - top-tier Marriott Bonvoy members - reported a serious safety incident involving sexual harassment to hotel management. What followed was extraordinary: instead of the hotel handling the matter, the husband ended up being detained by local authorities and ultimately deported from Qatar.
When Marriott's Loyalty Promise Meets Local Law
This is being described as one of the most egregious examples of getting "Bonvoyed" by Marriott - a term that's become shorthand in the points community for when Marriott's premium promises collapse under real-world pressure. The headline from The Telegraph: "My wife was threatened with rape in Qatar. I was the one thrown in jail."
Marriott hasn't reversed course on this one. It's a sobering case study in the limits of what hotel loyalty programs can - and can't - protect you from, particularly in countries with very different legal frameworks around speech and complaint. If you're planning travel to the Middle East, it's worth reading the full story and understanding the local context before you go.

🇪🇺 Europe Could Make Carry-On Bags a Right - Here's What That Actually Means
The European Parliament is now in decisive negotiations over a proposal that would ban airlines from charging extra for a standard carry-on bag. The push started this week, and supporters argue that bundling a carry-on into the base fare should be a basic passenger right.
Budget Airlines Would Take the Biggest Hit - But So Would Cheap Fares
The reality here is more complicated than "airlines can no longer nickel-and-dime you." If carry-on fees disappear, airlines like Ryanair and Wizz Air - which have built their entire pricing model around unbundling - will almost certainly bake that cost back into the base fare. Price-sensitive travelers who currently travel carry-on free with a cheap personal item will effectively subsidize everyone else.
That said, for points travelers booking through portals or redeeming miles, the change could simplify the math considerably. Award booking on European carriers already tends to include more baggage than budget carriers allow, so this may matter more for cash fare bookings. Speaking of European cash fares - Friday Flight Deals tracks the best cheap cash flights to Europe weekly, and it's worth subscribing if you're planning a summer trip.
Follow all our airline fees coverage for updates as this negotiation progresses.
💳 Citi's 25% Transfer Bonus to Leading Hotels of the World - Worth Doing?
Citi ThankYou points just launched their first transfer bonus to Leading Hotels of the World (LHW) in nearly a year. Through May 16, 2026, you'll get 250 LHW points for every 1,000 Citi ThankYou points transferred - up from the standard 200.
Who LHW Is Actually For
Leading Hotels of the World is a curated collection of independent luxury properties - not a typical branded chain. Their rewards program is relatively niche, and LHW points are best used at properties where the cash rate would otherwise be astronomical. If you have a specific LHW property on your bucket list and haven't been able to find value elsewhere, this bonus transfer rate could be worth running the numbers on.
For most readers, though, Citi ThankYou points are likely better deployed through airline transfer partners where redemption values are easier to calculate and maximize. You can track all current transfer bonuses - including this one - on our dedicated transfer bonuses page.
For all our Citi ThankYou coverage, see our Citi stories.
🚨 Deal Alert: Choice to Flying Blue at 100% Bonus - Ends Thursday
This one is genuinely time-sensitive. Choice Privileges is offering a 100% transfer bonus to Air France KLM Flying Blue, and it expires this Thursday, April 24. That means every Choice point transfers at 2x the normal rate.
Flying Blue is one of the more flexible programs for booking across the SkyTeam alliance - including Air France, KLM, Delta, and others. If you've been sitting on Choice points and have a Flying Blue redemption in mind, this is the window to move them. Award Travel Finder can help you locate available Flying Blue award seats before you commit to the transfer.
The Choice to Flying Blue 100% bonus ends Thursday, April 24. After that, you're back to the standard rate. Don't sit on this one.

✈️ British Airways Tampa Route Gets First Class - Upgrades to a Bigger Plane
British Airways is making a quiet but significant upgrade to its Tampa route, shifting from Gatwick to Heathrow and swapping in a Boeing 787-10. The bigger news for points travelers: BA is now selling First Class on this route, making Tampa International the first airport in the US to have a transatlantic route with international First Class service.
Tampa Gets Its First Transatlantic First Class Cabin
For BA Avios holders, this opens up a genuinely interesting redemption option. First Class on British Airways using Avios is one of the better-value redemptions in the program, particularly if you can find partner availability. The 787-10 also offers a noticeably improved product compared to what was previously flying the route.
UK readers planning to book this route should check out Smart With Points for UK-specific Avios strategy and card recommendations.
Use our British Airways Reward Avios Flight Finder to search for available award space on this route.

🏨 The Waldorf Astoria Maldives Award Problem Nobody Talks About
If the Waldorf Astoria Maldives is on your bucket list, new data on standard award availability should factor into your planning. Nightly cash rates start at nearly $3,000, and standard room award space - priced at 250,000 Hilton Honors points per night - is rarely available. Most of what you'll actually find listed is premium room awards, which cost more points and are often what's shown when properties claim "award availability."
Standard vs Premium Awards: A Meaningful Distinction
The gap between standard and premium Hilton award pricing at ultra-luxury properties is significant, and the Maldives is one of the most extreme examples. If you're targeting this property specifically, the advice is to check availability obsessively - standard space does appear, but rarely and usually well in advance.
Use our Hilton Points Calculator to work out the value of what you'd be redeeming before you transfer or commit.

💡 Don't Lose Miles Over a Simple Booking Mistake
A writer at The Points Guy shared a story this week that's worth passing along as a quick reminder: they lost 15,000 Delta SkyMiles by putting too much trust in the booking process and not double-checking account details before confirming a Cancun flight. The miles were credited to the wrong account and the airline wasn't inclined to reverse it.
It sounds obvious in hindsight, but it happens more often than you'd think - particularly when booking for others or switching between multiple loyalty accounts. Before you confirm any award booking, verify the member number, the traveler name, and that the miles are being deducted from the correct account. A 30-second check can save you thousands of points.
For Delta redemption strategy and valuations, use our Delta SkyMiles Calculator to make sure any booking you're making is actually worth the miles.
🌎 Trivia Reveal
The answer is: 1,000 Citi ThankYou points normally earns 200 Leading Hotels of the World points. With the current 25% transfer bonus (running through May 16, 2026), that same 1,000 points now gets you 250 LHW points. It's the first bonus to this partner in nearly a year, and worth knowing about if you have a specific luxury independent property in mind.
