Something quietly shifted in the loyalty world overnight - and if you book Alaska Saver fares even occasionally, you're going to want to read the next few paragraphs carefully.

There's a lot to cover today: a devaluation with a hard deadline, a transfer bonus worth acting on before the month ends, a genuinely interesting hotel promo, and an argument about elite status upgrades that I think is going to resonate with a lot of you. Let's get into it.

🤓 Miles & Points Trivia

Alaska Airlines' loyalty program recently rebranded. What is it called now?

  • 🔵 Mileage Plan

  • 🌺 Atmos Rewards

  • ❄️ SkyBonus

  • 🦅 AAdvantage

✈️ Alaska Just Nuked Earning on Its Cheapest Fares

Alaska Airlines dropped a significant policy change yesterday that affects anyone booking budget-friendly Saver fares. Starting July 31, 2026, Saver (X class) tickets will earn zero Atmos Rewards points and zero status credit. None. Not reduced earning - nothing.

Alaska is the last major US carrier to make this move, now joining American, Delta, and United in treating basic economy passengers as invisible to the loyalty program. The change was quietly announced via an update to the Atmos Rewards earning chart.

What Changes on July 31

Before this date, Saver fares earned a reduced 30% of eligible miles flown. That was already a haircut, but it was something. After July 31, it's a flat zero. No miles, no status qualifying miles, no elite progress. If you've been building toward Alaska elite status on the back of Saver fare bookings, the math just changed materially.

The good news: you still have nearly two months to book and travel on Saver fares and earn under the old rules. Any travel completed before July 31 earns at the current rate. This is worth keeping in mind if you have flexibility on upcoming Alaska bookings.

There's also a fee change buried in the same update: Atmos Rewards partner award booking fees are increasing by 60%, from $12.50 to $20. Not a dealbreaker, but worth knowing if you regularly book partner awards through the program.

💳 Amex's 25% Flying Blue Bonus Is the One to Move On This Month

Amex Membership Rewards just launched a 25% transfer bonus to Air France-KLM Flying Blue, valid from June 2 through June 30, 2026. That means every 1,000 Amex points transferred lands as 1,250 Flying Blue miles in your account.

Flying Blue is one of the more flexible programs out there - it prices awards dynamically but regularly offers monthly promo awards on Air France and KLM metal at sharp discounts. The combination of a 25% bonus and Flying Blue's promo award calendar makes this worth paying attention to.

Running the Numbers Before You Transfer

The bonus brings your effective transfer rate to 1:1.25, which meaningfully improves the value of any Flying Blue redemption you're targeting. If you've been sitting on Amex points and have a Europe trip in the pipeline, this is the window to move them. Just make sure you have a specific redemption in mind before transferring - Flying Blue miles don't expire with activity, but you want a plan.

Not sure how your Amex points stack up in value? The Amex Points Calculator can help you model the math before you commit to a transfer.

🚨 Deal Alert: $225 Back on ITA Airways Flights (Targeted Amex Offer)

If you're planning a trip to Italy or anywhere in Europe and you hold an Amex card, check your Amex Offers dashboard right now. A targeted promotion is offering a $225 statement credit when you spend $1,250 or more with ITA Airways by July 31, 2026.

That's an 18% discount on a transatlantic fare, effectively. ITA operates flights from major US gateways to Rome and Milan, and their prices have been competitive this summer. Two separate targeted offers are also live for Virgin Atlantic ($200 back on $2,000+ spend, through July 31) and Mandarin Oriental ($100 back on $500+ in hotel stays). Check your offers - these are targeted, meaning not everyone will see them.

💡 The $26 Upgrade Problem Nobody Wants to Talk About

Here's an uncomfortable truth making the rounds in the miles community this week: airlines are now openly selling first class upgrades for as little as $26 to the general public - the same seats that elite members used to clear into as a perk of loyalty.

When any passenger can bid $26 and snag the upgrade that used to be the crown jewel of elite status, the entire value proposition of chasing status starts to crack. The argument being made - and it's hard to dismiss - is that loyalty programs need to rebuild around benefits that can't simply be sold away: discounted buy-ups, earned upgrade credits that aren't diluted by open auctions, guaranteed extra-legroom access, and real support when travel goes sideways.

What Actually Still Has Value in 2026

The benefits that hold up best are the ones that aren't capacity-controlled: lounge access (though that's under pressure too), fee waivers, bonus earning, and operational support when things go wrong. Free upgrades clearing at the gate have been quietly dying for years - this $26 number just puts a price tag on the coffin.

When the seat you worked a year of elite spend to earn is available to any passenger for $26, the loyalty program owes you a better deal.

View from the Wing

If you're actively chasing status with an airline, it's worth pressure-testing which specific benefits actually justify that chase for your travel patterns. The upgrade dream may already be gone.

🏨 Wyndham Rewards Has a Summer Promo Worth Registering For

Wyndham Rewards - the loyalty program for the world's largest hotel franchise company with 9,300 properties across 90 countries - has launched its Summer 2026 promotion offering up to 15,000 bonus points for stays over the coming months.

Wyndham flies under the radar in the loyalty space, but it shouldn't entirely. The sheer footprint of the program means it covers a lot of ground in places where Marriott, Hyatt, and Hilton don't always have a strong presence - particularly for road trip stops, secondary markets, and budget-to-mid-tier travel. If you have Wyndham stays planned this summer, registration is the key step - make sure you're opted in before your next stay.

💰 Buy Points Worth Considering Right Now

A few buy-points opportunities are live that pair nicely with today's content. JetBlue is running a 125% bonus on TrueBlue point purchases at 1.43 cents each - that's one of the better buy rates you'll see from JetBlue and it runs through Wednesday June 10. Copa ConnectMiles has an 80% bonus at 1.61 cents through the same date. And if you're thinking about topping up for a specific redemption, United MileagePlus is running a 100% bonus at 1.88 cents through June 24.

The full list of active buy-points promotions - including the American AAdvantage 40% discount running through June 13 - is tracked in real time on the buy points promotions page.

🌎 Trivia Reveal

The answer is: 🌺 Atmos Rewards. Alaska Airlines rebranded its loyalty program from Mileage Plan to Atmos Rewards - a name that's starting to appear in headlines for all the wrong reasons this week, given the Saver fare earning cuts announced yesterday.

💬 Quick Question

Alaska's Saver fare earning cut got me thinking - do you regularly book basic economy fares and count on earning miles, or do you avoid them entirely? Hit reply and let me know your approach. I read every response and genuinely curious how many of you factor earning into the fare class decision.

Today's newsletter is a reminder that the ground keeps shifting under loyalty programs. Alaska closing the last gap on basic economy earning is not surprising - but it's worth knowing the exact date so you can plan around it. The Amex Flying Blue bonus meanwhile is a genuine opportunity for anyone with Europe plans before the end of June.
