There's a particular kind of frustration that hits differently when you're already sitting in your upgraded first class seat - and someone asks you to move.
That's what passengers on a Delta regional flight claim happened yesterday. And the story gets worse the more you dig into it. Let's get into it.
🤓 Miles & Points Trivia
Air France is saying goodbye to Paris Orly Airport after operating there for 80 years. But which major Paris airport will now handle all of Air France's flights?
🇫🇷 Paris Beauvais (BVA)
🇫🇷 Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG)
🇫🇷 Paris Le Bourget (LBG)
🇫🇷 Paris Vatry (XCR)
The answer is waiting near the bottom of today's newsletter... keep scrolling. 👇
✈️ Delta Just Sparked a Major Controversy
A Paid Upgrade Gets Pulled Mid-Gate
Passengers on a Delta regional flight are claiming the plane sat on the tarmac waiting for a late-arriving traveler with ties to airline leadership. But that's not even the most eye-catching part.
According to multiple passenger accounts, a man who had already been upgraded to first class was removed from his seat so the late traveler - reportedly the CEO's daughter - could take it. The gate agent asked him to give up the seat he had legitimately earned or paid for.
Delta has not officially confirmed the full details, but the story has been spreading fast. And honestly, it touches on one of the most sensitive nerves in travel: the perception that elite status and upgrade queues are fair, rules-based systems. When that trust gets broken - even allegedly - it stings.

🏨 Marriott's Elite Status Has a Serious Inflation Problem
When More Than Half the Room Is 'Elite'
Here's a number that should make every Marriott Bonvoy Platinum member pause: more than 50% of Marriott guests now hold Platinum status or higher. That data comes directly from Marriott's own disclosures, and it reframes what elite status actually means at this point.
Marriott has multiple pathways to status - credit card spending, co-branded card nights, challenges, and traditional night stays. The result is a program where elite benefits like late checkout, room upgrades, and welcome gifts are being extended to a massive portion of the guest base.
The practical consequence? Properties increasingly treat Platinum as table stakes rather than a differentiated tier. If you've been chasing Marriott status as a competitive advantage, this data is a useful reality check.
Remember when we covered Marriott's loyalty program numbers in detail? We did a deep dive on the shocking truth behind Marriott's numbers - worth a read if you're evaluating your hotel loyalty strategy going forward.
More than 50% of Marriott guests now hold Platinum status or higher. When everyone is elite, is anyone?
If you're deciding whether to focus your hotel spend on Marriott or shift to a program with more meaningful differentiation like Hyatt, our Marriott Points Calculator can help you model what your points are actually worth.
✈️ Air France Closes the Book on Paris Orly After 80 Years
A Quiet End to a Long Chapter
Air France has officially ended all flights from Paris Orly Airport (ORY), wrapping up 80 years of operations at the secondary Paris hub. All Air France routes now operate exclusively from Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG).
The consolidation had been signaled back in 2023 when Air France announced plans to wind down its Orly presence. The logic was straightforward: CDG is the airline's primary international hub, and splitting operations across two airports created operational complexity without proportionate benefits.
For travelers, this matters at the booking stage. If you're searching for Air France award availability using Flying Blue miles, all options now route through CDG. Orly will continue to serve other carriers - including Transavia and low-cost airlines - but Air France is done there.
Award Travel Finder tracks Air France award availability daily - if you're planning a Paris trip and want to see what's open right now, it's the fastest way to check without hunting through multiple search tools.
🚨 Deal Alert: Multiple Transfer Bonuses Expire Tomorrow
Tomorrow is March 31st, which means a stack of transfer bonuses disappear at midnight. If you've been sitting on Chase Ultimate Rewards points, this is the window that matters.
Chase is currently offering a 20% transfer bonus to British Airways Avios, Aer Lingus Avios, and Iberia Avios - all expiring tomorrow. There's also a 30% bonus to Wyndham. These are meaningful boosts, especially if you're targeting a specific redemption where the math works.
Chase's 20% bonus to British Airways Avios expires tomorrow, March 31st. Transfer 50,000 UR points and land 60,000 Avios instead.
The Avios bonus is particularly interesting if you're targeting British Airways short-haul redemptions or partner flights on Iberia. Run the numbers with our British Airways Avios Calculator before you transfer - make sure the redemption you have in mind actually delivers value at that cost basis.
Also expiring tomorrow: Capital One Miles to Preferred Hotels & Resorts I Prefer with a 30% bonus, and the Virgin Atlantic Flying Club buy points offer (70% bonus at 1.47 cents). The full list of what's expiring this week and beyond is tracked on our Transfer Bonuses page.
💳 Alaska Atmos Card Bonuses Are Going Up April 1st - But So Is the Bar
Higher Bonus, Higher Spend Requirement
Alaska Airlines is telling employees that the Alaska Atmos Ascent card is getting an increased sign-up bonus starting April 1st. The catch: the spend requirement to unlock that bonus is going up by $500.
Whether the increased bonus is worth the higher spend threshold depends on your typical monthly spend. The Business and Summit card versions haven't been confirmed yet, so those details are still pending.
If you've been considering the Alaska card stack and your spending comfortably clears the new threshold, April 1st could be a better entry point than applying today. For all our Alaska Airlines coverage, including past card analysis and route news, check out our Alaska tag page.
🛒 Rakuten's Best-Ever New Member Bonus Is Live
If you don't already have a Rakuten account, the current new member offer is the best it's ever been: $50 bonus for signing up and making a qualifying purchase. Rakuten is one of the most underrated tools for earning Amex Membership Rewards points on everyday shopping you'd do anyway.
The setup takes about three minutes. You shop through Rakuten's portal or browser extension, and you earn Amex points (or cash back) on top of whatever your credit card already earns. It's straightforward stacking.
There's also a separate promotion running right now: 100x points (essentially 100% back) on NordPass and NordProtect purchases through Rakuten. That's a niche deal but worth flagging if you've been considering a password manager subscription. Not everything needs to be a points redemption - Friday Flight Deals has been finding sub-$400 round-trips to Europe this week if you'd rather bank cash instead.
💰 Buy Points Before These Offers Expire
Two buy points deals worth flagging before they disappear: United MileagePlus is offering a 95% bonus when you buy miles, but that expires tomorrow (March 30th). Finnair Plus is offering a 40% discount also expiring tomorrow. If you have specific redemptions in mind for either program, check the full list of active buy points offers before deciding.
American Airlines AAdvantage has a 40% discount through April 24th at 2.26 cents per mile - a longer runway if you're planning an AAdvantage redemption. Use our American Airlines Miles Calculator to check whether buying makes sense for your specific itinerary.
🌎 Trivia Reveal
The answer is B - Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG). All Air France flights now operate exclusively from CDG following the airline's decision to exit Paris Orly Airport, where it had operated for 80 years. Orly remains active for other carriers, but Air France has officially consolidated at its primary hub.
💬 Quick Question
Which hotel loyalty program do you actually trust to deliver a real upgrade when you show up at the desk?
The Marriott elite inflation story got me thinking about this. When more than half the room has Platinum status, upgrades start feeling like luck rather than loyalty. Hit reply and tell me which program you think still genuinely rewards its top members - I read every response and I'm curious where the trust actually lies these days.
That's all for today - see you tomorrow with more! Safe travels.
