175,000 points. That's not a typo - and it's not a number you see on a $99 annual fee card very often.

The IHG Premier card is sitting at its highest welcome bonus ever right now, and the expiry window is closing. If that alone doesn't get your attention, we've also got Marriott doing something they're calling a 'positive change' that is quietly a very honest admission about how much award prices have climbed. Plus United is finally doing something about its infamously average Polaris food. Let's get into it.

🤓 Miles & Points Trivia

Quick question before we dive in: which hotel program does IHG One Rewards partner with for the Premier credit card's annual free night benefit?

  • 🏨 Marriott Bonvoy

  • 🏨 IHG One Rewards (their own program)

  • 🏨 World of Hyatt

  • 🏨 Hilton Honors

The answer is waiting near the bottom of today's newsletter... keep scrolling. 👇

💳 175,000 IHG Points - The Best Bonus This Card Has Ever Seen

There are welcome bonuses, and then there are moments where a card genuinely earns its place in your wallet. The Chase IHG One Rewards Premier card is having one of those moments right now.

The current offer stands at 175,000 IHG One Rewards points after spending $5,000 in the first three months. That's the highest bonus this card has ever offered, and it's marked as a last-chance deal - meaning it can disappear at any time.

Why This Card Is Worth Holding Long-Term

The real value here isn't just the welcome bonus, though 175,000 points is enough for multiple free nights at IHG properties worldwide. The $99 annual fee card comes with a complimentary night every year (with a top-off option), the 4th night free on award stays, and IHG Platinum status. That 4th night free perk alone can make extended trips significantly cheaper.

IHG's portfolio spans InterContinental, Kimpton, voco, and hundreds of other brands. If you stay at any of these with any regularity, the math on this card works in your favor almost immediately. And if you're new to IHG, the bonus alone gives you a strong starting position for free nights.

The spend requirement is $5,000 over three months - not trivial, but very achievable if you're paying rent, covering a big purchase, or putting regular expenses through the card. Check out all our IHG credit card coverage for more context.

🏨 Marriott's Free Night 'Upgrade' Hides a Bigger Truth

Marriott Bonvoy announced this week that free night certificates can now be topped off with up to 25,000 points - an increase from the previous 15,000-point cap. On the surface, that sounds like a win. More flexibility, more properties to choose from, more value from an already popular perk.

But here's where it gets interesting.

What the Top-Off Increase Actually Signals

The reason Marriott needed to raise the top-off limit is that award prices at properties have climbed so sharply in recent years that the old 15,000-point buffer wasn't enough to reach many of the hotels these certificates used to cover on their own. In other words, you now need more points to book the same stays.

It's a useful change, no question. If you've got free night certificates gathering dust because your preferred properties crept just beyond the original cap, this opens things up. But it's worth naming what it really is: a subtle acknowledgment that Marriott's award pricing has inflated significantly. If you want to run the numbers on what your Bonvoy points are actually worth today, our Marriott Points Calculator is a useful starting point.

The practical upside: if you're holding a 40,000-point or 50,000-point certificate and there's a property you love that now prices at 60,000-65,000 per night, you can top it off and make it work. Just keep an eye on what you're burning through to get there.

Marriott now lets you top off free night certificates with up to 25,000 points - up from 15,000. Useful, yes. But it also quietly confirms just how much award prices have climbed.

✈️ United Polaris Is Getting a Real Food Upgrade

United Airlines has announced a collaboration with Netflix's Chef's Table to overhaul its Polaris business class dining. Starting August 1, 2026, passengers on long-haul Polaris routes will be served 10 new meals curated by a rotating roster of chefs selected from United's hub cities and international gateways.

This matters more than a standard menu refresh. It's United publicly acknowledging that its business class food has been a persistent weak point, and it's attaching a known, premium brand to the solution. Chef's Table isn't a cooking show famous for mediocre food - it profiles some of the world's most acclaimed kitchens. Using that association is a deliberate signal about the direction United wants to take.

The CEO Who Never Eats on Transatlantic Flights

There's a detail that surfaced this week that makes this upgrade even more pointed. United CEO Scott Kirby, in a recent interview, admitted he has never eaten on an overnight transatlantic flight. He skips the meal, sleeps, and lands fresh. Which is a perfectly reasonable personal strategy - but also perhaps explains why Polaris catering has taken this long to become a priority.

The August 1 launch gives travellers booking Polaris itineraries this summer something genuine to look forward to. If you're planning a business class redemption on United, our Award Travel Finder tracks Polaris availability across routes so you can find the right dates before the seats disappear.

🚨 Deal Alert: Southwest Companion Pass Through Feb 2027

If you've been thinking about the Southwest Companion Pass, this is your last chance to lock one in through a credit card welcome bonus - and the offer covers you through February 2027.

The Companion Pass is arguably the best domestic travel perk in the US. Your designated companion flies with you for just the taxes (from $5.60 each way) on every single Southwest flight - including award tickets - as long as there's a seat available. One card application could cover nearly a full year of two-for-one flying.

The offer is live right now on Southwest personal cards, but it's flagged as last chance - so if this is on your radar, sooner is better than later. Check out all our Southwest coverage for more on the program.

🏨 Emirates Banned a Passenger - He Found Out at the Airport

Here's a story that raises more questions than it answers. A family from the UK - husband, wife, and baby - booked Emirates tickets for a holiday in Dubai. Around 24 hours before departure, Emirates cancelled just the husband's ticket. The reason: he had been banned by the airline.

The twist is that he had no idea he was banned until that moment. No prior communication, no warning when the booking was made, no flag at any earlier point in the process. Emirates apparently allowed the ticket to be purchased and then cancelled it at the last minute without explanation.

Stranded in Dubai, No Answers Given

Making it more complicated: the family had already travelled to Dubai for a connecting flight when this information surfaced, leaving the passenger stranded with no clear path to resolution. Emirates has not publicly explained the circumstances of the ban or why it wasn't flagged at booking.

The lesson here, uncomfortable as it is, is that airline bans can apparently sit on file without any notification to the passenger - and can surface at the worst possible moment. If you travel frequently with any carrier and have ever had a serious dispute or incident, it may be worth a proactive check. For all our Emirates coverage, see our Emirates stories.

🌍 GHA Discovery Just Made Status Matching Very Easy

GHA Discovery is one of those hotel loyalty programs that deserves more attention than it gets. It covers hundreds of independent and boutique luxury properties worldwide - think Capella Hotels, Anantara, and other brands you won't find in the major chain portfolios.

This week, GHA launched a paid status match promotion that lets you fast-track your way to Titanium or Platinum status. If you're already holding status with another hotel program and want access to GHA's portfolio of smaller, often more distinctive properties, this is a relatively low-friction way in.

The paid element means it's not a freebie, and whether it makes sense depends entirely on how often you'll actually stay at GHA properties. But if luxury independent hotels are your thing and you're looking to diversify beyond Hyatt, Marriott, and Hilton, it's worth a look. Speaking of hotel status, Friday Flight Deals occasionally spots cash rates at GHA properties that make positioning stays genuinely cheap.

🌎 Trivia Reveal

The answer is B - IHG One Rewards (their own program). The Chase IHG One Rewards Premier card earns points in IHG's own loyalty program and comes with a free night certificate valid at IHG properties each card anniversary year. The certificate can now be topped off with up to 40,000 points to reach higher-category properties - one of the card's most underrated long-term benefits.
