There's a quiet but significant shift happening at American Airlines right now - and if you're the kind of traveler who flies premium tickets for work and then hunts for the cheapest fare for a family vacation, you're about to feel it.
Two stories today tell the same underlying story: loyalty programs are getting more ruthless about who they reward. American is drawing a hard line. Aeroplan is raising prices. And several transfer bonuses are about to expire. Let's get into it.
🤓 Miles & Points Trivia
Aeroplan's upcoming award chart update adds more pricing levels per category. How many redemption levels will exist per tier under the new system?
🅰️ 3 levels (off-peak, standard, peak)
🅱️ 4 levels (low, standard, high, peak)
🅾️ 5 levels (lowest, low, moderate, upper, peak)
🅳️ 6 levels (by day of week)
The answer is waiting near the bottom of today's newsletter... keep scrolling. 👇
✈️ American Airlines Is Done Pretending Every Flyer Is Equal
Here's the reality American Airlines has now made official: if you buy the cheapest fare, your loyalty points essentially don't count. The carrier is doubling down on a strategy where AAdvantage status and recognition are largely reserved for travelers buying full-fare or premium tickets.
This isn't just about upgrades. It's about how the airline sees its relationship with frequent flyers. If you fly expensive tickets for work and then grab a budget fare to take the kids to Florida, expect to be treated well on the business trip - and like a stranger on the family trip.
The Fare-Based Loyalty Divide
The practical impact is real. Passengers on cheaper fares can expect reduced priority for upgrades, fewer loyalty benefits at check-in, and less recognition from agents at the gate. American is essentially telling its most cost-conscious customers: we appreciate your business, but not your loyalty.
On the flip side, American is also rolling out a system to grade flight attendants - which suggests the airline is trying to tighten up service quality internally while simultaneously stratifying what level of service different passenger classes receive. It's a delicate balance.

✈️ American Is Also Making Delay Vouchers Easier to Actually Get
There's a small but meaningful piece of good news buried in the American Airlines story today. The airline is changing how it issues meal vouchers during delays - and it's a genuine improvement.
Previously, gate agents had to issue vouchers one passenger at a time, which created long lines and left many eligible travelers without the compensation they were owed. Under the new system, agents can issue vouchers to an entire flight simultaneously. The voucher value hasn't increased, but the chance of actually receiving one just went up dramatically.
What Stranded Passengers Need to Know
If you're stuck on a delayed American flight, you should now receive a voucher notification automatically rather than having to hunt down a gate agent. It won't make the delay any shorter, but it makes the whole experience slightly less miserable - and ensures you're not leaving money on the table.
💳 75K AAdvantage Miles on the Citi Business Card - One of the Best Offers We've Seen
Speaking of American Airlines, if you're building up AAdvantage miles, there's a genuinely strong offer on the table right now. The Citi AAdvantage Business World Elite Mastercard is currently offering 75,000 bonus miles - and that's among the highest welcome offers this card has historically carried.
AAdvantage miles are flexible in ways that sometimes get overlooked. You can use them to book flights on American and its Oneworld partners including British Airways, Japan Airlines, and Cathay Pacific. For premium cabin redemptions on partner airlines, the math can get very compelling very quickly.
Use the American Airlines Miles Calculator to see what 75,000 AAdvantage miles could be worth for your next redemption before you apply.
🌍 Aeroplan's Award Chart Is Getting More Expensive in June
We covered the broad strokes of Aeroplan's devaluation yesterday, but the full details are now out - and they're worth a closer look. Effective May 20, 2026, Aeroplan is expanding its pricing structure from three levels per category (off-peak, standard, peak) to five levels: lowest, low, moderate, upper, and peak.
What does that mean in practice? The base price increase across most categories is 20 to 37.5 percent or more. That's not subtle. And remember, Aeroplan is one of the most valuable frequent flyer programs out there precisely because it gives you access to Star Alliance partners plus many other carriers with genuinely reasonable pricing. That edge is now narrowing.
The Stopover Sweetspot Still Exists - For Now
One thing that remains intact, at least for now, is Aeroplan's ability to add stopovers for 5,000 points. That's a genuinely rare perk that almost no other program offers, and it dramatically increases the value of complex itineraries. If you're planning a trip with a stopover in a hub city, Aeroplan still deserves a serious look even post-devaluation.
If you have Chase Ultimate Rewards points, there's a 20% transfer bonus to Aeroplan running right now - but it expires Thursday April 30. Transferring before that deadline locks in extra points before the new award chart kicks in on May 20. That's a meaningful window.
The 20% Chase to Aeroplan transfer bonus expires Thursday April 30 - and Aeroplan's award prices rise May 20. That gap matters if you're planning a trip.
Check out all our Air Canada Aeroplan coverage for more on the program and how to maximize it.
🚨 Deal Alert: Transfer Bonuses Expiring Thursday - Three Worth Acting On
Thursday April 30 is a busy deadline day. Three transfer bonuses all expire that day, and at least two of them are genuinely useful.
The 70% bonus when transferring Chase Ultimate Rewards to IHG is one of the most generous IHG transfer bonuses we've seen. IHG points work well for aspirational hotel redemptions at InterContinental properties around the world, and at 70% extra points, the math improves dramatically. If you've been sitting on Chase points and have an IHG redemption in mind, this is a hard one to ignore.
Capital One Miles to JAL Mileage Bank at a 30% bonus is the other one to flag. JAL is a fantastic Oneworld partner for booking premium cabin awards to Japan and across Asia, and Capital One transferring at a bonus makes the conversion far more efficient than usual. JAL miles can be used to book American Airlines flights domestically too, which opens up some interesting routing possibilities.
Check the full list of active transfer bonuses at milesandpointsdaily.com/transfer-bonuses before Thursday.
🛒 Buy Points Before These Windows Close
A few buy points offers are worth flagging before they disappear. Avianca LifeMiles is running a 160% bonus through Tuesday April 28 - that's one of the most aggressive buy points offers in recent memory. LifeMiles are valuable for booking Star Alliance business class, and at 1.27 cents per mile with a 160% bonus, the value proposition is hard to argue with if you have a specific redemption in mind.
United MileagePlus is also offering a 50% discount through April 30, pricing purchased miles at 1.88 cents each. And if you're a British Airways Avios collector, there's a 40% bonus running through today only - April 27. That one is urgent.
Use the Award vs Cash Calculator to figure out whether buying points actually makes sense for the redemption you have in mind before pulling the trigger. And see all current buy points deals at our buy points promotions page.
✈️ American's Retired A330s Are Heading to Vietnam
Here's an interesting footnote to the American Airlines story. You may remember that American retired roughly 40% of its long-haul fleet at the start of the pandemic, betting that wide-body capacity wouldn't be needed for years. That bet cost them flexibility and strategic ground they've never fully recovered.
Those Airbus A330s aren't sitting in the desert anymore. Eight of them are being picked up by Sun PhuQuoc Airways, a leisure airline startup in Vietnam that received its air operator's certificate in September 2025 and has already begun commercial operations. It's a reminder that the planes had plenty of life left - and that the decision to retire them early was more about accounting than airworthiness.
For award travelers, the emergence of new Asian carriers is always worth watching. Sun PhuQuoc is a leisure airline for now, but new entrants in growing markets have a way of shaking up award availability on established routes over time.

💰 Chase Disney Inspire Card Bonus Changes May 4 - Current Offer Worth More
One more thing before we close out today. The Chase Disney Inspire card is changing its welcome bonus on May 4. Currently, new cardholders who spend $1,000 in three months receive $300 as a Disney eGiftcard plus $300 as a statement credit - that's $600 in combined value.
After May 4, the bonus drops to $500 as a statement credit only. The spend requirement stays the same at $1,000. So if you were considering this card, the current offer is meaningfully better - you have until May 3 to apply under the existing terms.
Friday Flight Deals also keeps an eye on Disney destination cash deals - if you'd rather offset the cost of a Disney trip with a cheap flight, check out this week's deals before booking.
🌎 Trivia Reveal
The answer is 🅾️ - 5 levels per category. Under Aeroplan's updated award chart effective May 20, 2026, each category will have five pricing levels: Lowest, Low, Moderate, Upper, and Peak - up from the current three (off-peak, standard, peak). This expansion is what enables the 20 to 37.5%+ base price increases across most award categories.
