Something quietly massive dropped from United yesterday - and I don't think it's getting enough attention yet.
Two of the world's largest airport lounges. A complete MileagePlus restructuring. And a strategy document that makes it crystal clear where loyalty programs are heading. Let's get into it.
🤓 Miles & Points Trivia
United Airlines is building two of the world's largest airport lounges. Which two airports will host them?
🌆 Chicago O'Hare (ORD) and Los Angeles (LAX)
🤠 Houston (IAH) and Washington Dulles (IAD)
🗽 New York JFK and San Francisco (SFO)
🌞 Denver (DEN) and Miami (MIA)
The answer is waiting near the bottom of today's newsletter... keep scrolling. 👇
✈️ United's Lounge Mega-Plan - and Why It's About Way More Than Comfy Chairs
United Airlines isn't just building nicer airport spaces - it's placing a multi-hundred-million dollar bet that premium hub experiences are the next profit engine.
An internal presentation leaked this week reveals United is building two of the world's largest airport lounges at Houston Intercontinental and Washington Dulles, while also laying groundwork for a return to New York JFK. These aren't incremental upgrades. They're destination-level spaces designed to make United's hubs genuinely sticky for high-value travelers.
Hub Loyalty as a Revenue Strategy
The logic is straightforward: get premium travelers to choose United's hubs specifically because the experience is better, and you create a flywheel of credit card spend, status upgrades, and long-term loyalty. United is explicitly connecting lounge investment to faster profit growth - not just passenger satisfaction scores.
For frequent United Airlines flyers sitting on MileagePlus miles, this also signals something bigger: United is doubling down on the premium experience stack, which tends to mean more aspirational redemption options down the line. Use our United Miles Calculator to check what your stash is worth right now.
💳 United MileagePlus Just Made Credit Cards the Center of Everything
Hot on the heels of the lounge news, United dropped a separate bombshell: major MileagePlus changes that fundamentally shift how members earn status and miles, with co-branded credit card spending front and center.
The pattern is unmistakable now. We talked yesterday about how AAdvantage is worth four times more than American Airlines itself - that's largely because of co-branded card revenue. United is clearly watching that math and moving in the same direction. The program changes appear designed to reward credit card loyalty above almost everything else, including how much you actually fly.
What the MileagePlus Shift Means for Your Earning
If you're a United flyer who earns status primarily through flights, pay close attention. The new structure puts credit card spending in a more prominent position for qualifying toward elite tiers. For those of you running Chase cards to earn United miles, this is actually good news - your card spend could carry more weight than before.

🚨 Deal Alert: Citi AAdvantage Business Card Hits Best-Ever 75K Offer
Timing is everything in this game. Just as American Airlines is under the spotlight for its loyalty program dynamics, Citi has quietly launched the best-ever welcome offer on its AAdvantage Business card.
Here's the deal: 75,000 American Airlines miles after spending $5,000 in the first 5 months, with the $99 annual fee waived for the first 12 months. So you're essentially getting 75K miles and a year of card benefits for free.
The AAdvantage Business Perks Beyond the Bonus
The welcome bonus is headline-worthy on its own, but for frequent American flyers, the card also unlocks access to AAdvantage Business - which includes elevated earning on American tickets and, for many cardmembers, the ability to share miles or status benefits across a business account. If you're already spending on American, stacking these rewards is a no-brainer.
American miles are currently on sale too - you can buy AAdvantage miles at a 40% discount through May 2, bringing the cost to around 2.26 cents each. Check all current offers at our Buy Points Promotions page.
For more on the AAdvantage program and what those miles can unlock, see all our AAdvantage coverage.
🌐 Flying Blue Status Match Just Opened to the US - Here's the Math
Air France-KLM's Flying Blue program has been running a paid status match for a while, but here's the update that changes things: they just expanded eligibility to include the United States and Canada.
If you hold elite status with any airline and have been curious about trying Air France or KLM in Business Class, this is your lowest-friction entry point. You pay a fee to match your existing status into Flying Blue, then qualify by completing a set number of segments or earning requirements.
Why Flying Blue Is Worth a Serious Look Right Now
Flying Blue is genuinely one of the more interesting programs for transatlantic Business Class. There's also a 100% transfer bonus running right now from Choice Privileges to Flying Blue - ending April 24 - which means if you have any Choice points sitting around, you can double them before moving to Flying Blue. That's a rare opportunity. See the full list of active transfer bonuses at our Transfer Bonuses page.
The 100% Choice-to-Flying Blue transfer bonus ends April 24. If you have Choice points, this is one of the most powerful moves you can make before that window closes.

🏨 Amex Centurion Lounge Network Grows - But Boston Requires Patience
American Express officially confirmed three new additions to its Centurion Lounge and Sidecar network this week. The headline: a 20,000 square foot Centurion Lounge is coming to Boston Logan. The catch: it won't open until 2029.
Also confirmed: a Sidecar by Centurion Lounge concept - the smaller, restaurant-style format that launched in Las Vegas - is coming to Charlotte Douglas airport by 2027. And Dallas-Fort Worth is getting a major expansion of its existing Centurion Lounge, which is one of the busiest in the network.
Sidecar vs. Full Centurion - What's the Difference?
The Sidecar format is worth understanding if you're an Amex cardholder. It's a smaller, QR-code-menu dining space available to passengers departing within 90 minutes. It's designed to reduce overcrowding pressure on the main Centurion locations while still delivering a premium food and drink experience. For Charlotte travelers, it's a meaningful upgrade over the current options.
If you've been wondering whether the Amex Platinum still justifies its annual fee given the lounge access benefits, our Is the Amex Platinum Worth It? guide breaks it all down. The lounge expansion makes the answer more compelling for frequent travelers at these hubs.
🏕️ World of Hyatt Is Paying 20x Points for Glamping
Not every great points opportunity involves a city hotel or an airport transit. World of Hyatt just launched a promotion offering 20x points per dollar spent at Under Canvas properties - the glamping brand that partners with Hyatt and sits near places like Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, and Zion National Park.
20x is genuinely elevated. Most hotel stays in this category earn at the base rate. If you've been sitting on a pile of Hyatt points and thinking about a different kind of trip, this runs the math in your favor significantly. Hyatt points are currently on sale at a 20% discount through April 7 as well - so buying a top-up and staying at Under Canvas could stack nicely. Use our Hyatt Points Calculator to see what your points are worth.
Award Travel Finder has been tracking some solid Hyatt award availability at outdoor properties lately - worth checking if you're flexible on dates.
💡 Chase Freedom Q2 Categories Are Live - Activate Now
Quick action item before you forget: Chase Freedom Flex and legacy Chase Freedom Q2 bonus categories went live yesterday. Through June 30, you can earn 5% cash back - or 5x points if you pair with a Sapphire card - on Amazon, Chase Travel, Feeding America, and Whole Foods.
The cap is $1,500 in combined purchases per quarter, which means up to 7,500 bonus points or $75 in cash back. You need to activate manually - it won't happen automatically. Head to the Chase app or chase.com now if you haven't done it yet.
If you pair the Freedom with a Chase Sapphire Reserve, those 5x points become transferable Ultimate Rewards - which means they could be worth significantly more than 5 cents. The 20% Chase transfer bonus to Air Canada Aeroplan running through April 30 is one option worth considering right now. For all our Chase card coverage, see our Chase credit cards stories.
🛒 Best-Ever Rakuten Bonus: $50 for Signing Up
If you've been putting off setting up a Rakuten account, now is the moment. Rakuten extended its best-ever new member offer: sign up through a referral link by June 30, spend at least $50 at eligible retailers within 90 days, and both you and your referrer get a $50 bonus.
The real power move here is selecting Amex Membership Rewards as your payout option instead of cash. That turns your $50 bonus - and every future cashback dollar - into transferable Amex points. For anyone already holding an Amex Gold or Platinum, this is an easy points multiplier on purchases you'd make anyway.
Not everything needs to be an award booking either - Friday Flight Deals found some serious cash fare deals this week if you'd rather pay cash and save your points for premium cabins.
🌎 Trivia Reveal
The answer is: Houston Intercontinental (IAH) and Washington Dulles (IAD). United's internal presentation confirmed both locations as sites for two of the world's largest airport lounges, with a JFK return also in planning stages. Now you know - and now you can plan your connection strategy accordingly.

💬 Quick Question
United is betting big on lounge access as a loyalty driver. So I'm curious: does airport lounge access actually influence which airline you choose to fly or which credit card you carry? Hit reply and let me know - I read every single response and this one genuinely shapes how we cover the lounge arms race going on right now.
That's it for today. Big week in the loyalty world - United is reshaping MileagePlus, Amex is building out its lounge empire, and a handful of transfer bonuses are quietly ticking toward expiry. Stay sharp out there, and see you tomorrow.
