💳 Deal Alert: Fly nonstop to Ireland for just 11,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points - one of the best transatlantic sweet spots right now
There's something quietly brazen happening in the airline loyalty world right now - and United just turned up the volume on it.
While most airlines quietly devalue their programs through fine print and policy updates, United is doing something different: it's running ads that openly celebrate cardholders while reminding everyone else they earn less. It's a fascinating and slightly unsettling shift. More on that below.
But first, let's tackle a trivia question that connects to one of today's bigger stories...
🤓 Miles & Points Trivia
How fast did the SAS aircraft reach before the crew realized they were attempting to take off from a taxiway instead of the runway?
🐢 Around 40 mph - barely moving
🚗 Around 80 mph - highway speed
🚀 Over 120 mph - near takeoff speed
✈️ It actually lifted off briefly
The answer is waiting near the bottom of today's newsletter... keep scrolling. 👇
✈️ United's New Ad Campaign Says the Quiet Part Out Loud
Earlier this week, United rolled out something that's hard to ignore. After cutting MileagePlus flight earnings by up to 40% for passengers who don't hold a Chase co-branded credit card, the airline is now spending real advertising dollars to drive that message home.
The new ads make it explicit: cardholders matter more. Full stop. Which would be one thing if it were buried in a terms-and-conditions update - but running it as a marketing message is a different level of boldness entirely.
Who Gets Caught in the Middle
Here's the uncomfortable wrinkle: a significant chunk of United's most valuable customers simply can't get a Chase-issued card. International travelers, people with thin credit files, or those who've hit Chase's 5/24 rule are locked out. United is essentially telling those flyers they're second-class members of the program.
If you're in that group and flying United regularly, now is a good time to run the actual math on what your miles are worth. Our United Miles Calculator can help you figure out whether it still makes sense to collect MileagePlus miles at the reduced earn rate - or whether a different program serves you better.

🚨 A SAS Plane Hit 120 MPH on a Taxiway - Here's What Happened
This one is genuinely alarming. Back in early February, a Scandinavian Airlines aircraft attempted to take off from a taxiway at a major airport rather than the designated runway. Authorities have now published their preliminary report - and it somehow raises more questions than it answers.
The Brussels Taxiway Incident
The crew accelerated past 120 mph before realizing the error and aborting. Think about that for a second - that's near the speed at which many narrowbody jets rotate for lift. The fact that they caught it before becoming airborne is the only reason we're discussing this as a cautionary tale rather than a catastrophe.
The preliminary report hasn't made it easy to understand how the mistake was even possible. Standard procedures and checklists exist precisely to prevent this kind of runway confusion. Investigators are still piecing together the crew communication and navigation inputs that led to the error.
SAS is in a particularly interesting spot right now - the airline recently partnered with Rove Miles as the only way to transfer points to SAS EuroBonus, and there's even a targeted 20% Rove transfer bonus to SAS running through April 8th. Despite this incident, SAS remains a solid redemption partner for Star Alliance awards.
🏨 American's New Austin Lounge Has Something No Other Admirals Club Has
American Airlines announced plans for a brand-new Admirals Club at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport - and it comes with a feature the airline has never offered in any of its clubs before: an outdoor terrace.
12,000 Square Feet and a View of Downtown Austin
The new club will span 12,000+ square feet on the west side of the terminal, right where American's gate concentration is highest. It will feature elevated design, full kitchen facilities, and views of downtown Austin from the terrace. Construction is expected to begin later this year.
The timing is notable. American has been under fire recently on multiple fronts - from internal flight attendant issues to political pile-ons on social media. A flagship lounge announcement in a high-growth market like Austin is the kind of positive news the airline could use right now.
This also comes alongside news that American's London Heathrow catering situation may finally be improving. DO & CO is reportedly stepping in on London routes. After the Heathrow catering meltdown, this could leave American's premium transatlantic product meaningfully better than before. Follow all the American Airlines news at our dedicated tag page.
✈️ Southwest's Companion Pass Just Got a Longer Runway - Through Feb 2027
If there's one domestic travel perk that genuinely moves the needle, it's the Southwest Companion Pass. Your designated companion flies for just the taxes on every single flight - including award bookings - as long as there's a seat available. No blackout dates, no fare class restrictions.
Getting the Pass Through a Card Bonus
Right now you can earn a Companion Pass valid through February 2027 through a Southwest credit card welcome bonus. That's nearly a full year of two-for-one travel - which, if you actually fly Southwest with any regularity, is worth hundreds or potentially thousands of dollars depending on your travel volume.
The author at View from the Wing recently used two Companion Passes on a single family trip, which paints a pretty clear picture of the compounding value when multiple household members hold the pass.
Want to understand the full value before you commit? Our Southwest Points Calculator can help you figure out what that bonus is worth to your specific travel patterns. See all our Southwest Companion Pass coverage for more details.
🚨 Deal Alert: Fly Nonstop to Ireland for 11,000 Chase Points
This one deserves your attention today. Nonstop flights to Ireland are currently bookable for just 11,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points - and with the 20% transfer bonus to Aer Lingus Avios running through March 31st, your Chase points go even further right now.
Ireland is genuinely one of the most underrated European destinations for points travel. Dublin is an easy entry point, but the real magic is getting out into the countryside - the Wild Atlantic Way, Connemara, the Cliffs of Moher. This is a rare case where the award pricing actually reflects what the destination deserves.
The 20% Chase to Aer Lingus Avios transfer bonus ends March 31st - that's less than three weeks away. If Ireland is on your list, this window is worth acting on.
Our Award Travel Finder has been tracking excellent transatlantic availability lately - worth checking before those seats disappear.
💳 Chase Freedom Q1 Activation - Last Call Before March 31st
Quick reminder before this slips by: if you have a Chase Freedom Flex or the legacy Chase Freedom card, you have until March 31st to activate and earn 5% back (or 5x points) on dining, Norwegian Cruise Line purchases, and American Heart Association donations. Freedom Flex cardholders get an even better 7% on dining this quarter.
If you haven't activated yet, it takes about 90 seconds on the Chase app or website. This is the kind of thing that's easy to forget and annoying to miss - especially if you're a regular restaurant-goer.
Not sure if the Freedom Flex fits your wallet? Our Chase Points Calculator can help you model the earning potential across your spending categories.
💰 Current Offers Worth Your Attention
A few bonuses worth flagging before they expire:
The Amex Membership Rewards to Avianca LifeMiles transfer bonus is currently sitting at 15% and ends March 28th. LifeMiles is one of the best-kept secrets for Star Alliance redemptions.
On the buy points side, Air Canada Aeroplan is running a 90% bonus through March 19th at 1.44 cents per point - one of the better Aeroplan purchase rates we've seen. JetBlue is also offering a 125% bonus through April 18th at 1.43 cents per point. See all current buy points offers at our buy points promotions page.

🌎 Trivia Reveal
The answer is: Over 120 mph - near takeoff speed. 🚀
The SAS crew accelerated past 120 mph on a taxiway before aborting the takeoff roll. The preliminary report from investigators still doesn't fully explain how both pilots failed to recognize they were on the wrong surface. It's one of those aviation incidents that shouldn't be possible with modern checklists and procedures - and yet it happened.
💬 Quick Question
Do you hold a co-branded airline credit card, or do you prefer a general travel card like Chase Sapphire or Amex? Hit reply and let me know - I read every single response!
