Quick question before we start: when was the last time a major US airline asked the federal government for a bailout with zero legal pathway to receive one? Because that's exactly where we are today.

Spirit Airlines - the same carrier that already burned through hundreds of millions in pandemic-era government aid - is back at the door, and this time the situation might be even more desperate than it looks. Let's get into it.

🤓 Miles & Points Trivia

In honor of American Airlines' 100th anniversary sweepstakes, here's a quick one: which alliance does American Airlines belong to?

  • 🌟 Star Alliance

  • 🌍 SkyTeam

  • 🌎 oneworld

  • 🦅 Independently aligned

The answer is waiting near the bottom of today's newsletter... keep scrolling. 👇

✈️ Spirit Airlines Is Asking Taxpayers to Save It - Again

This is not a drill. Spirit Airlines has formally approached the Trump administration with a request for emergency government funding to avoid liquidation. The airline is currently in its second Chapter 11 bankruptcy in under two years, and the situation has deteriorated to the point where executives are reportedly warning that shutdown could happen within days without intervention.

Why the Ask Is So Unusual

The problem isn't just that Spirit is struggling - it's that there's essentially no legal mechanism for the government to rescue a single failing airline without an act of Congress. And even if the political will existed, Spirit already received hundreds of millions in pandemic aid under the CARES Act. Giving them more without Congressional approval would almost certainly trigger immediate legal challenges from competitors.

The airline's troubles have been compounded by rising jet fuel costs, which have thrown a wrench into its restructuring timeline. Spirit had hoped to emerge from bankruptcy by early summer, but that window is looking increasingly unrealistic.

The broader question hanging over all of this: if Spirit shuts down, what happens to its passengers mid-booking? If you have upcoming Spirit flights, it's worth having a backup plan. For all our coverage of what's happening with budget carriers, check out our airline news stories.

✈️ Southwest Just Got Serious About Lounges

This one has quietly become a much bigger story than most people realize. Southwest Airlines now has at least five airport lounges actively in its pipeline - Honolulu, Nashville, Denver, Dallas Love Field, and Austin. That's not a test. That's a strategy.

From Budget Carrier to Lounge Builder

Southwest has spent decades as the no-frills, no-assigned-seats carrier that proudly stayed out of the premium travel arms race. That positioning is clearly shifting. The lounge buildout follows other recent moves like assigned seating and premium cabin options - all signals that Southwest is chasing a different kind of traveler than it used to.

For points enthusiasts, the interesting question is whether Southwest lounge access will eventually be tied to credit card status or Rapid Rewards elite tiers. Right now there are no confirmed details on access structure, but given how Delta, United, and American all leverage lounge access as a credit card retention tool, it would be surprising if Southwest went a different direction.

Keep an eye on the Southwest Rapid Rewards credit card refresh that'll likely accompany this. For all our Southwest coverage, see our Southwest stories.

🎉 Win 100,000 AAdvantage Miles - Zero Purchase Required

In honor of its 100th anniversary, American Airlines is running a sweepstakes that will give 100 lucky people 100,000 AAdvantage miles each. No purchase is necessary to enter, which makes this one of the cleanest free-shot opportunities we've seen from a major airline in a while.

How to Stack Your Entries

Here's where it gets interesting - if you book an American Airlines flight during the entry period, you receive 100 bonus entries per booking, up to a maximum of four bookings. That means you could qualify for up to 400 additional entries just by booking flights you might have been planning anyway.

100,000 AAdvantage miles is genuinely valuable. To give you a sense of what that unlocks, use our American Airlines Miles Calculator to model out redemptions - but at a high level, you're looking at business class to Europe on partner carriers, multiple domestic round-trips, or a solid foundation toward a premium long-haul redemption.

This is a no-brainer entry. It takes a few minutes, costs nothing, and the upside is significant. Award Travel Finder tracks availability for AAdvantage redemptions daily if you need ideas for what to do with a potential 100K windfall.

🚨 Deal Alert: American Airlines 100th Anniversary Sweepstakes

100,000 AAdvantage miles. 100 winners. No purchase needed to enter. Bonus entries available for booking American flights during the entry period. Enter now - this window won't stay open long.

🏨 American Flight Attendants Want More Pay for London Flights

Here's a story that reveals something real about how airline operations work behind the scenes. For several weeks, American Airlines has had a catering problem at London Heathrow after ending its partnership with dnata, its previous catering supplier. The replacement situation is apparently messier and more labor-intensive for crews - and now the flight attendant union is demanding additional compensation for the extra workload.

A Catering Mess With Passenger Consequences

The practical impact for passengers is real. If you've flown American out of Heathrow recently, you may have noticed reduced or inconsistent catering. The union's position is essentially that if the airline created an operational problem that falls on crews to manage, crews should be paid accordingly for it. That's a reasonable argument on its face, even if the timing and framing create complications.

For frequent flyers on the transatlantic route, this is worth watching. If you're flying American out of LHR in the coming weeks, it might be worth checking whether cash alternatives are competitive. Friday Flight Deals frequently surfaces solid transatlantic fares if you'd rather pay cash than points on a route that's underdelivering on the product.

💳 Two Transfer Bonuses Die Tonight - Act Before Midnight

This one is time-sensitive enough that I'm flagging it separately. Two Citi ThankYou transfer bonuses expire today, April 19th - and both are worth considering before they vanish.

The 30% bonus to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club means your Citi points go further on Virgin's award chart, which includes some excellent long-haul redemptions via Delta partners and ANA. The 25% bonus to Avianca LifeMiles is also worth a look - LifeMiles regularly prices Star Alliance awards competitively, and the bonus stretches your existing Citi balance meaningfully.

Both Citi ThankYou bonuses - 30% to Virgin Atlantic and 25% to Avianca LifeMiles - expire today, April 19th. Transfer before midnight if you have a redemption in mind.

If you're not sure whether to transfer now or wait, the general rule is: only transfer when you have a specific redemption in mind. Points that live in Citi ThankYou are more flexible than points locked in a single airline program. That said, if you've been eyeing a Virgin Atlantic or LifeMiles redemption, today is your window.

For the full current list of transfer bonuses across all programs, bookmark our Transfer Bonuses page - it updates in real time.

💳 Also on the Radar: Chase to Aeroplan Still Running Through April 30

With the Citi bonuses expiring today, it's worth reminding you that the Chase Ultimate Rewards to Air Canada Aeroplan 20% bonus still has until April 30th. Aeroplan is one of the most flexible Star Alliance programs around, and 20% extra goes a long way when you're targeting business class on partners like Lufthansa, Turkish, or ANA. For all our Air Canada Aeroplan coverage, check out our tag page.

Not sure how much your Chase points are worth before transferring? Run the numbers with our Chase Points Calculator before you commit.

🌎 Trivia Reveal

The answer is oneworld. American Airlines is a founding member of the oneworld alliance, which also includes British Airways, Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, and others. It's one of the three major global alliances alongside Star Alliance and SkyTeam - and membership matters a lot when you're planning partner award redemptions.

💬 Quick Question

Are you sitting on any Citi ThankYou points right now - and if so, do you have a redemption in mind, or are you holding them as flexible currency?

Hit reply and let me know - I read every response. Whether you're hoarding them for a big trip or strategically moving them to partners as bonuses pop up, I'd love to hear your strategy.

That's all for today - see you tomorrow with more!
